I'd love to show you guys how nice it was on Monday. I showed up to PC at right as the sun was rising over the coastal range. Only two dory boats had shown up before me.

The surf was low and easy to get over. The birds on the rock were still waking and things were pretty quiet.

I'd love to show you the decent founder I picked up.

I'd love to show you the blue rockfish double and the china rockfish.

It would be great to show you all the HD video of a DOUBLE Lingcod hook up. Both were legal too! There was also a good looking underline that I'd like to show you.

I moved down closer to the rock as the winds picked up ever so slightly, and the place turned into a washing machine. Just as I got about even with the rock I was nailed by an 8# cabezon (season is closed). It was pretty red, and would have looked great to see on your computer screen.

Immediately after catching that cabezon, I hooked up another. Just seconds apart. I'd love to show you, but this cabazon was huge and mean. I pulled it into my kayak and it ran the length of my legs. I'd love to show you, but it flipped out on my kayak and knocked my new video camera into the ocean.  :(

Ouch!  thats a bummer.   I think I will come up with a leash for my new camera.

The north side of the rock is always a little maytag.  Head in around the south side if you want to skip the wash cycle.   I think its caused by the north swell bouncing off the north face of the rock and running into incoming swells.

How deep was it?  For a video camera, I'd be marking the GPS and finding a diver friend.

Wow!  That sucks!  Sorry to hear that man.  At least you had some awesome fishing.....

Yikes, that hurts.  Sorry to hear about that bro.  :'(  I was hoping for "I would love to show you ... but I left the camera at home."

Time spent developing a float system for my camera was time well spent imo.

If I had known where to jig, I would have gone after it yesterday.  That sucks.

Similar conditions yesterday - flat as glass going out yesterday - I decided to not rush, the ocean would still be there if I took my time, so I didn't bother to get out of bed until 5am.  Got to the beach and launched by 9:30.

A few dories, super flat water, grey whale(s), funky tea color water with visible particulate matter in it.

I managed to scratch up 2 mediumish (15 & 16") blacks over the course of the day, got back on the beach at about 1:30. Had several nice take downs that resulted in a couple of seconds of fight, a headshake, and then nothing. Brought all of one underling to the boat, and had what was probably a keeper ling let go right as I went in with the net.  Last fish of the day was a nice 20+" cabbie right off the rock that puked all over my boat before I could release it.

The weirdest part of the day was the fog.  there was a heavy marine layer offshore when I launched, and at around noon I was casting into a bait boil over the reef west of the rock, paying attention to the little bait fish.  Two dories about 100 yards away.  looked up, dories are gone, heavy, heavy fog has settled in.  A little spooky - the horn on the bellbouy didn't make it any less spooky. I couldn't see the haystack until I was spitting distance away, and I used my GPS to point the way home - although I could have used the noise of the birds to guide me in, at least to the rock.

Nice day for paddling, not so nice for fishing.  I want me a flounder or five.

OUCH!

I REALLY wish I did not know what you were talking about. ::)

Yeah, that's right, I needed just a bit more salt for that wound.

Floaty thingys are a VERY good idea.

In spite of the loss, that sounded like a pretty good day on the water!

I tied a camera specific leash loop to the inside the left pocket of my PFD.  Before I hit the water, I leash my camera to this and stow it in said pocket.
Once I'm out in the water, and comfortably setup for the day, I pull the camera out and just drop it down between my PFD and chest below the neck.
When a photo opportunity pops up, I can quickly pull it out, turn it on, focus and shoot all with one hand.

If the situation gets ugly while the camera is out, I can just drop it back in behind my PFD and deal with turning it off later.

Now if by chance the fish gods start allowing larger and more fish to jerk on my line, it may give me a reason to make a mount and float system for it somewhere on the yak to record such events.

Until then, I'm sure lightening will strike my plastic ship first.   :-\
