Mark, i kno that on medium spinning gear they pull like a freight train.... biggest i've been able to hook and get near the boat before it went unbuttoned probably went 25lbs, and  my arms were wet noodles after wards for a bit.....just imagine what one would be like  on a fly rod. probably one of the longest and best fights ever...

Dino, sometimes, youngster, i gotta envy you... that easily dwarfs anything i've caught in recent years....

Spot,

It took about 45 minutes to reel him in and I had to run 150 yards along the cliff line in the dark to avoid getting him stuck in the rocks.  The real fight was the 2.5 hr hike back to my truck in the pouring rain carrying (2) 12' Rods, 20 lbs of gear (we used 12oz sinkers) and all I had to carry the bugger was a back pack. His head was barely in the bag and I had to tie 2 pieces of rope from his tail to the right and left sides of my waste to help keep it balanced. BUT WELL WORTH IT!

Rich,

Don't you just love that about these fish! The biggest I caught on my 8' 6" Gloomis spinning rod with my old Stradic 4000FG back home was just over 20 lbs, but it was a Horse Eye Jack (Trevally). But, I also caught 12 lbs Blue Fin Jack (Trevally) that fought harder than Horse Eye Jack. The Giant White and Blue Fin Jacks are the hardest fighting of all the Jacks IMO. Yours must have been GW or BF if you hooked him while on a boat. Damn I miss fishing for Jacks! I really want to go to Hawaii or Mexico and try fishing for them.

Hah!  We run away from jacks in Mex.  Well, sort of.  Jack Crevalle (aka Toro!) are a PITA.  Great fighters, not good eating.  That's usually what one thinks of in Mex when one says jacks.  But then again, Roosterfish (in the jack family) are sought after.  Great fishers, not good eating.  Why is it that they are sought after other than they be pretty?  Yellowtail jacks are sought after.  Great fighters, great eating.  Amberjacks?  Got them too!  Cocinero (barred jacks), small inshore, fish 'em like papios.  Use them as bait!!!

Nothing like a GT though.  Serve me up one of thise anyday.  Don't got these in Mex.

On a trip to Christmas Island several years ago I went through 5 fly lines as the GT's would run around every rock they could and shred the line. I don't think that anything pulls harder than a big GT.
