What's the likelihood that the big blue will be kayak fishable in late March?

At the end of march i would say at least a 50/50 shot at decent conditions. i think the year before last i fished quite a few times in march but this last year, not so much.
See ya on the water..

other than places like sunset bay, march and april can be a real crap shoot.  more often on the not fishable side of things

you really just have to watch the swell reports every day, because there's always a few good days in every month. typically the summer months have the smallest swell averages though. I got out on a couple of 4-6ft days last February. It was 55F and sunny with winds to 15kts. That's a pretty normal summer forecast. This past Oct. it was 4-7ft for an entire weekend and 43ft the following Monday.

but yes, if you are trying to plan a vacation....it's a crap shoot.

I will confirm that planning anything that has to do with the ocean may turn out to be a crap shoot! I rolled only snake eyes yesterday, one throw after another... ::)
I'm representing the "zombie surfer" element here at my local beach lately..... stiff-legged, slow, older-than-dirt, and easily taken down. But I get right back up again! :D

Late March can sneak in a few user-friendly yak-fishing days here along the South Jetty, and Ling season will be open here then.

Was really just looking for historical perspective from people's past experiences. Not trying to plan anything yet...

I think thats what you got...  For me early spring can have some good day and some real nasty ones and a lot of in between.  You just never know, all you can do is be ready to go and watch the forecasts

What everyone else said. I usually think of the big blue from April on, with late April being the earliest. We're both in similar locations and have a good haul to get out there. Having the odds in your favor for at least a day or two usually equals good fun.

I'd say your chances are pretty good.

I only get to fish on Sundays and while this year I didn't make it out till april, I got multiple March trips in the previous two years.  Watch the forecast and be ready to jump on it.

Definitely planning to spend a few long weekends in the Hoebuck and/or La Push areas this summer.  The Cabins at Hoebuck are calling my name and look like a great place for some family outings.

The nice thing about Hobuck is that if the ocean is kicking up just fish the straight. I am itching to get back in the salt!!
