I think a couple of you are mostly fly fishermen.  And some of you are partly fly fishermen.  Sound off here and let me know.  I'm just trying to understand who is who is who and what they do on their yak.

I haven't touched the bug rod in years.  I was never very good at it, but I used to enjoy it a lot.  Perhaps I'll have an occasion to break it out this summer.

Hey Allen,

I throw files and I admit that I am still struggling to figure out the salmon fishery on the flyrod from a Yak- but I love challenges!  I have taken several silvers on the bugrod out at Neah Bay and Seiku during the runs, but I have yet to repeat the act from my Yak.  I have caught some resident silvers off of Fox Island from my yak, but they needed a year or two before they were ready for the table....

Will there possibly be a flyrod category for the derby???!!!

Pete

I don't think we'll have a fly fishing specific category this year.  If there is enough interest and we have an extra prize, then perhaps, but I'm guessing there are not enough fly only fisherment to support it this year.  Maybe in the future sometime, you never know.

My fly rod use varies- around home I use it almost exclusively. I'm mostly C&R on the local waters, for trout and steelhead, occasionally spinyrays.

Over on the salt, I use a flyrod a lot less, mostly cause my gear is prettty light, in the 4-6wt range. I do use it sometimes on the beaches, and a couple times at Neah Bay.

I believe there are a few more kayak flyfishers here than when this thread was first active.  I'm noticing a higher percentage of kayak flyfishers here than in NorCal.  I wonder why?

If you're a  new member and you kayak flyfish, chime in here.

Hello, I'm new the the forum.   I would like to introduce myself, I am exclusively a fly fishermen.  I tie my flies, and build my own rods.   I started kayak fishing while I was stationed on the east coast, (I recently retired from the military).   I mostly chased Strippers, Bluefish and Weakfish.

I am originally from Florida, and I've fished for all the inshore species that are common threre, including trips to the Keys and Everglades.   (I have a great TARPON story while kayak fishing).

My kayak was stolen, and I am now ready to "re-kayak" myself, probably a Ocean Kayak Prowler 15.

Anyway, just thought I'd say hello.

Welcome Boondock!  Yet another kayak fly fisher.  A few more and I'll have to open up your own forum category.

Sorry to hear about your kayak being stolen.  Did that happen around here?  When?  And what kind?

Hi Boondock,
I'm another transplanted east coast fisherman originally from Maine, but I spent a few winters working in Key West on a called the "Yankee Capts" (www.yankeecapts.com).  Welcome to the site!

Hi Boondock-

Welcome- glad to have another fly fisher out there!  Sorry to hear about your yak, but once you get re-fitted drop me a line.  I would be happy to offer info on some of the areas I have had my limited success at withing the Puget Sound and some of the inland lakes.  I also tie my own flies, but I haven't ventured into building a  rod yet- that work thing keeps getting in the way.....

Hope to hear from you soon.

Pete

Hey guys, thanks for the warm welcome.

My kayak was stolen with my 1998 Suburban attached to it in the parking lot of the apt complex I lived in in Tacoma.   The Suburban came back a few days latter, but the kayak was long gone.

The only places I paddled in Washington was Titlow Beach, Owens Beach (at Pt Defiance) and and Hoodsport in the Hood Canal.   When I arrived in WA, I was really interested in the rivers, and spent the majority of my fishing time, wading in many of the rivers I'd read about for years.

I look forward to a new kayak, and I love the Prowler 15.   I just wish Ocean Kayak still had the color white as an option.   I called and asked, but they discontinued "white" years ago.

At least I still have my paddle !

-- pjrflyguy, I built a 10ft 7wt rod (on a Dan Craft Blank) specifically for kayak fishing, and it's a great "paddle-boat" rod.

-- Wanye Jordon, the keys are about as much fun as you can have, with a kayak and a flyrod.   I spent 2 weeks chasing bonefish in the middle keys after I scared the heck outta myself, hooking a 100lb tarpon on my kayak.   I did manage to catch a bunch of smaller Tarpon in the 10lb range, which are a blast.   But just paddling around the flats and mangroves is amazing.

I guess I'll revive this thread from the cobwebs....As soon as I actually own a kayak, I'll be joining the ranks of the yak flyfishers. I guess using rentals counts for now though ;)

Yes and no for me.  I do a lot of flyfishing but usually use gear for salmon from my kayak.  Kayak fishing for me is something I really only do in summer, while flyfishing in rivers is much more of a year round thing.  It's all good.

You might want to take a look at the new Trident from OK....not many people seem to know that they are ready and waiting for you!  Sorry to hear about the last one.

Hi Allen,

I was mostly a serious fly fisherman in the 80's but in the 90's after moving to southeastern washington started enjoying all fishing methods, which I still do to this day.  I still prefer kayak fishing for big trout with a flyrod in selective fishery lakes. Bass and panfish also.  I like catching steelhead under certain conditions with the flyrod from the yak.  I've built a couple dozen flyrods over the years and still have a couple rod blanks in the closet that have been there a couple years that need some work.  Too many things to do and not enough time.
