I'm looking into getting a dedicated kayak for the rivers.  Tired of sitting in cold water and worrying about punctures in the inflatable!

Right now I'm looking at one of these:  http://www.oceankayak.com/kayaks/single_kayaks/scrambler_11.html

Stable and easy to turn, and pretty cheap.

Also looking for a good used kayak if it fits the river requirements.

From years on the sticks in a drift boat and having made a number of floats in a SOT on rivers like the Clack,Trask,Wilson etc. etc. I have come to the opinion that when it comes to SOT's if it has much or  any keel (they also lack the necessary rocker to handle well too) it will be less than ideal for flowing rivers.  I have almost come to the point where I am considering making my own "one off" SOT river fishing yak as anything I have come across just isn't the right medicine for a serious river drifter/fishing platform.

Ummmm, hey buddy!  Would you mind making me one too while you're at it?  Think Pram lines.   ;D

Pelagic aint just whistling dixie here.  The keel is a major problem when crossing current seams.  A flatter bottom would let you paddle/row away from danger just like a drift boat or pontoon.

Exactly Spot!  I was thinking basically a SOT pram.  Maybe a little wider than a Cobra F&D, about 9-10ft long with no keel and some decent rocker.  Basically a one man, car top,  steelhead killing machine.

Like a wider Dagger Pegasus with a fishing oriented deck?

How about one of these el' cheapo kayaks that Fred Meyers sells.

A little short, but no keel and some front rocker.

Or one of these models?

Are pontoons legal for AOTY?  They are far superior to kayaks on a river. Last time on the Nisqually I saw  couple guys on them and was very impressed with the way they handled the river.

The yellow Freddies tubs are about $250ish around here.

Pontoons are where its at.  I had one very similar to yours Zee, a 10 foot Bad Cat on 20 inch tubes.  Lots of fun and very safe and stable.  Wish I had never sold it.  Still know the guy who bought it (neighbor at the coast), maybe some day he'll make a mistake and sell it back to me.
