I guess I feel like the flat one (scampi I guess) mimics the action of a shrimp, prawn or squid better than the grub.

Well, there you go.  I view the grub more like a baitfish instead of a crustacean.  And the scampi more like a crustacean, hence why it gets called up for cabbie duty.

For most rockfish and lings, I find a lot more baitfish than crustacean in their stomachs, with the exception of squid and octopi.

you know your right. I've never seen a crustacean from ling puke or in the belly....mostly rockfish and other lings as far as I can tell. I just get a good vibe from the scampis for bottom fishing. can't put a finger on it, just a gut thing.

maybe it's the squidishness. I do typically use skirts, which would make it look pretty much like a squid moving through the water.

yes #3 is a kalin BigN ... just giving you a hard time.

I am super stoked to try the Hali Hawg 12". It is sented and really stinky so it should do well. The thing is huge!!

I will be tying all my leaders from 150 mono.

Personally I prefer grubs in larger sizes and scampi in smaller sizes

For me its mostly about the motion/action of the lure rather than trying to imitate a specific food source's shape.  Although there are times when matching the hatch is totally called for.  I personally just have more faith in the attracting powers of the twin tails on a scampi rather than the one on a grub.  The addition of large skirts (not the little pre-made ones you can purchase) make more of a difference.   A 6 inch rootbeer scampi with a 3-4 oz head and a white/chart skirt is absolute murder on cabbies off Oregon's north coast.
