Personally, I installed an anchor trolley and zig-zag cleat, and use an extension cord reel with 300' of line, a crab float, and a 3 lb folding anchor.  It is the bsteves anchor system.  Works well to about 100-125' depth depending on tidal flow/wind.  I've never used it in a river.

yeah, in slow water. You never want to anchor in anything but slow calm water anyhow.

I have a system like Bsteves and Demonick and I anchor in the Willamette all the time. Even in heavy current flows.  My anchor is a 2.5 kg folding claw anchor.  I have a trolley on both sides of the boat.  I drop an anchor, attach to one side, and run the trolley to either the bow or stern.  I do the opposite on the other side with a small drift sock.   It keeps me nice and straight with very little side to side drift.  However, I make sure to not let the sock get beyond the end of the boat in case I need to bring the fishing line around to the other side.  That way it won't get tangled.
