Newbie Questions:
1-Is the frozen herring at Dick's ok to use?
2-Where are we meeting and launching from? Time?
3-Will there be a need for an anchor?
4-What else should we bring other than safety equipment and food?

1- You can find frozen herring at Fishermen's, Dick's or Bi-Mart.  And yes, they're just fine.  Just make sure they're thawed but still cold when you want to use them.  Brine is not mandatory.  It does help to make them last longer on your hook though.

2- The Gilbert River boat ramp on Sauvie's Island is where we'll meet up.  I plan on being there around 7:00AM.  Sunrise is at 7:30.
If any of you drive down the ramp to unload your yak, make sure that you everything ready for a quick transfer and keep the walkway clear for others.
You will need a parking permit for Sauvie's Island.  You can get either a 1 day or a year long at the Sauvie Island store.  You'll need to pick one up before Sunday as the store doesn't open till 8:00 or 9:00 on Sunday.
If you want to buddy up with someone (to save the cost of a permit), you can meet up at the park-n-ride just under the bridge (on the island) as there's no parkin permit required to park there.

3- You won't need an anchor.  I will bring mine along if anyone would like to see how it's done but I don't know if there'll be enough current to fish properly on anchor.

4- Bring water.  Even if it's raining you'll be needing to re-hydrate.

Gear:

Baits (Choose 1 or 2)
         - Cut Plug Herring + Mooching rigs, Scents (optional)
         - Whole Herring + Rotator, Scents (optional)
         - Prawns + Prawn Spinners, Scents (optional)
         - Brads Cut Plug + Scent, oil packed tuna or herring or anchovie fillets (you'll need one of these)
         - Quickfish + herring or anchovie fillets (optional), Scents (optional) and stretchy string (to hold on the fillets)
         - Salmon Spinners + Scent (optional)

Attractors - Flashers like Konezone or Big Al's (Optional)

Misc  - 3-Way or Sliding Swivels
         - 4oz to 6oz cannonball sinkers
         - 12 to 20lb test leader for your dropper weight (Should be lighter than your main line)
         - Beads
         - Bead Chains
         - Snap Swivels

1-Cool. I probably won't brine this time but maybe the next time out
2-I called the park and they also said you can pick up one day or annual passes at Bi-Mart or Fred Meyer. Maybe Dick's too, I think they said anywhere fishing licenses are sold. I will be there at 7:00!
3-Sounds great, I'm still working on coming up with a good system for mine.
4-Will do!

For a one rod solution a 8 1/2-9 foot medium to medium heavy is a safe way to go. You can troll, sit on the hook and even cast with it.  The Buzz Ramsey IM7 or IM8's in 15-50 are good rods for their value.    For a dedicated trolling rod I use 9 1/2 - 10 ft soft action Lamiglass classic glass rods.  You want the rod to be able to flex and give the fish some cushion and time to turn while its taking the bait.  Way more solid  hook ups and fewer lost fish especially hot fish like Springers

Correct me if im wrong, but it seems like one can buy the parking permits online and just print them out.  I'll post the link I found when I get home if someone doesn't beat me to it.

I can't wait to see it.  Heading over the Sauvie's the day before my 1st Channel Springer trip of each year has become a ritual I'd gladly give up.

Tomorrow is a Go!

Weather forecasts for tomorrow morning are iffy but I'm not going to pull the plug.  Seems like some of my best days fishing (for anything) have been on days with iffy weather forecasts.  I'll understand if any of you bail but if you do, you'd better hope to heck that nobody gets a limit or you'll be kicking yourself.

I'll have my VHF with me, monitoring 16 and 69.  If you show up late, you should be able to see a couple of us from the dock (as long as we haven't limited out or been blown off the water).

I bought mine at bi-mart today, pretty sure you can get them anywhere fishing licenses are sold. Stoked for tomorrow! I'll be there 100%!

I know it's a little late to be figuring all this out, but that's pretty much my style, so deal with it.  ;)

Here's the link I found which lets you purchase any license issued by the ODFW(this includes daily and annual Sauvie Island parking permits).  There is a $2.00 shipping & handling fee for licenses that require a hard copy that is sent though the mail.  The Sauvie Island daily permits are instant and are simply printed out so there's no extra fee.

For an overview page for online license sales, click here.

For a list of what licenses you can buy online and whether they are instant fulfillment or sent through the mail, click here.

Sweet springers this makes things easy!  See ya'll tomorrow!

That is awesome!  Great info!  I can see using that a bunch in the future! The ability to print and immediately use the day licenses is perfect for taking non fishing folks out without the hassle of a run to Fishermen's etc.

Late to announce my intentions but it looks like it will be a "go" for me tomorrow as well. I am new in my Hobie Outback but have fished for springers many times before out of a much bigger boat. I think I will figure out the tackle part ok but it will be doing it all while paddling the channel that will be the new challenge for me.  :)

Cool!  The more the merrier.

I know that several of you have the kayak trolling thing down.  If you guys are game, let's try to match someone new up to someone with experience for the intial drop.  Once you see how it's done and get one under your belt, it's pretty easy from there.
I'll let y'all in on the trolling lanes that have paid off for me the last few years and point out some of the hazards before launch.

As I mentioned above, give the Kayak Springers for Dummies article a read before you go.  It addresses the rig and the drop pretty thoroughly.

Boat traffic shouldn't be too bad tomorrow as both the Columbia and Willamette are open.

Here's hoping for a bunch of fish porn to post tomorrow night!!!!!
