Hey, is anyone from my neck of the woods interested in carpooling down, I have a crew cab and can probably handle 1 maybe 2 Got racks.  Just short on cash.  I could meet at say Olympia.  let me know.  Not saying it's a go but that might turn the table, a little extra gas money that is.

I just got off the phone with the Officer in Charge at the Depoe Bay Harbor.  He had received some phone calls from concerned citizens about kayakers going through the hole.  This was more of a courtesy/educational call and he asked that I pass this info onto you all.  Some of this is cut/paste from previous posts.

They weren't yet aware of our event on June 18.  They are now!!!

- The local charter captains would really appreciate you flying a flag when on the water.

- When heading in or out, radio your intentions to exit the harbor on Chanel 80.

- While passing under the bridge, stay as close as is safe to the side in case a vessel under power missed your call.

-Before entering "the hole" you should (must!) sound a long horn blast (4-6 seconds).   Yes, please pick up a horn for this use.

- Once outside the slot, immediately paddle a little south or north so that you're out of the shipping lane between the buoys and the harbor entrance.

I'm glad you covered this again for this year's event!

I hope you sold the Harbor Master on the idea that this event works as a training venue for people who will be using this harbor in the future.  It ends up being a real Win/Win situation for everybody.

I'd like to make it a requirement that ALL COMPETITORS MUST FLY A SAFETY FLAG while participating in this event.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

No selling required.  The Harbor Master's main concern is that all of us (kayakers and boaters alike) do things in a safe (and legal) manner.

This is a great idea.

It is amazing how far you can see a kayak sporting a flag versus one thats not.  This is especially critical if there is swell of any size.  The taller the better!  Based on quite a bit of on water observation my personal feeling is your flag should be about as tall as your paddle or taller, short flags just aren't as visible..

I agree that a flag be flown on the ocean and particularly this event.

For those that are squeamish about drilling holes in your kayak, and don't already have a flag mount.....do this.
Just go to your local fabric store and pick out some bright orange, or red ripstop fabric and cut into the shape of a square or triangle (your choice).
The end results after the below sewing instructions should be 12" high, by 18" long. Plan for the extra material.
If you take two or three rods out there with you, just keep it over the tip of the one that you are not currently using.  Swap it over as you switch rods.
If you only take one rod in the ocean and don't have provisions for a flag mount, Goodwill usually has cheap used fishing rods that can be used as your flag mast.

Assembly as follows:
Fold the fabric over enough on the mount side, and sew it down to create a tube large enough to slip over the end of your fishing rod(s).
Sew the tube shut on the top.
Pop a grommet through the fabric near the bottom of the flag next to where you just made the tube.
Tie some bungee through the grommet.
Add a clip to the end of the bungee.
Slip the flag over your fishing rod end, and then clip the bungee to one of the rod eyes below.
Place rod back into an upright holding rod holder.
Go fish!

I have a bunch of flags I use for my ATV's and I will bring them for anybody that wants to borrow one. Just shoot me a PM and I will reserve one for you if you just need to "get by" for this event. No mount needed- Just drop them into a rod holder (bungie it in just in case you huli!).

It is not just the folks at Depoe Bay that appreciate it.  I have had a few boaters actually slow down next to me on the Willamette while I'm sturgeon fishing and thank me for having a flag.

Wow!  Way cool, guys!  I had no idea so many would enjoy getting together in MY HOME TOWN.  I am the happy guy that not only moved here, just a year ago, but also just got a sea kayak a few months ago.  Have not had it on the salt yet...... but soon.

Will write more later.  Will not be on the salt with my boat that day (wifey reasons I'd have to explain as they are too humerous), but I WILL BE THERE.  I can probably help out to an extent.  And, if someone has a small powerboat available...... I know the local professional photographer who would probably be interested in shooting the event for you all.  His prices are very reasonable and he usually makes a CD of all the photos for free or minimal charge.  I also have a digital SLR and will surely have it straped to my body.

This is awesome!   Looking forward to seeing kayak fisherpersons, and checking out all the mistakes I've made in my riggings.   :o

They do sometimes miss calls.  The last time INSAYN and I were there. We had called as we were headed in. Didn't here anything back, started to head in and just as we got to the edge of the entrance a boat called and started heading out.  I imediatly called back to let them know that we were allready coming in but he was allready under the bridge. So we ended up turning out to let him pass.

I surely was not too excited about sharing the tunnel with him.    ;D
PROGRESS IS JUST BEING THERE!

WOW!
It might be time to get salty with you folks.

Sweet.  I'm now a "rockfish".  I'll take that as a positive sign.
