Not to threadjack but... isn't that the Parche?  Must've been an interesting time on a spec-op boat.  I spent five years "pushing" on SSBN/GN-727.  There's a couple of us bubbleheads on here.  I'd love to talk used-to-fish with you.  If you're average size or slightly smaller I can loan you a pair of neoprene waders, then you just need to come up with a top.

No threadjack imo, but I'm not a moderator.
Yup , thats the ol Parche,reactor/ sea trials , can't recall the test, the nuke one where they take 1/3 of the crew off, finish testing ,then the 1/3 goes on duty when they reach port and finish.
Good to hear of more "squids" n bubbleheads here. I actually tried to get on the trident subs (hmm your Trident is 560' , as opposed to 15'), I wanted q-6(trident) sonar but was sent q-5(fast attack), mad at first, but glad in the end. Thanks for the suit offer! I'm 5'10", should be 180, but at 245 lb,think I'd damage the suit with my organic pfd.
Favorite  moment on board: torpedo test finished Near Nanaimo,BC , glassy smooth seas in the strait, and I finally got to be topside for a nice sunrise ,COLD, sitting near the water breaking on the hull(going slow 10kt or so), seeing dolphins "escorting" us. You know the same feeling in a kayak.

Updates noted. I'm assuming this is best done by staying Friday night and saturday night too?Gonna tip my hand at how little I seem to know our own coast too..... The camp ground is about 18 miles from Depoe bay and not actually at the bay as I see it on the map, right?

updating...I suspect google maps has the map pin too far south of the actual campground, big clue is no camp at the pin but go straight north and there is a campground. Looks 3mi East of siletz .Either way I'm gonna use the link provided to get a spot reserved. Hope i remember to do that tomorrow.

Chinook Bend is on the river, it's a little drive to Depoe Bay.  It's best to get there early on Friday, get settled in and get some rest, then stay again Saturday night because the awards banquet/shindig/fish fry/beerfest is pretty good.

With that kind of bold requirement thrown out there, do we have a backup venue or party only logistics around a blown out ocean?
I really don't want a repeat of 2009 where we had to switch gears with barely two weeks notice.   Going into it with a known backup plan BEFORE the "Pay Here" button is added to the front page only seems logical.

May I throw out a few suggestions that shouldn't cost the competitor a ton of money to switch over to?

Siletz Bay crab tourney?
Siletz Bay flounder fish off?
Siletz River bass fest?

Reserved a tent site for Fri. and Sat. nights. The lady for the reservations(Chinook bend) seemed to know of "some kayakers" so I think I'll be in the right vicinity. If not look for a red toyota with a green kayak wandering around.

Unless they did something different this year, the camp 'sites' consist of two 'areas' with no real boundaries other than the river, a tidal stream, and the bonfire area.

Siletz River bass fest?

How would you feel about Yaquina Bay Rockfish and Perch?
Maybe just a biggest fish outta the Siletz (no species requirements)?

I'd be down for anything other than the crab option... too many types of gear to lug down.  Yaquina Bay would be the best option in my opinion.  The Siletz option could be interesting too.

My feeling is if the Ocean is uncooperative then move it to Yaquina bay for rockfish/lings/perch/etc. West of say the Science center. There can be great rockfishing and ling action along the Jettys!  If both are to nasty I say we head back to camp to possibly reschedule, or do what we did at the Salmon tourney when no one caught a keeper, raffle off the prizes and eat some tasty food/drinks and call it a day.  The integrity and meaning behind being a "Rockfish Classic" winner looses much of its luster when it turns into a planter trout tourney.

I agree.  Planter trout option shouldn't be an option.

If the weather doesn't cooperate, the weather doesn't cooperate.  If it's clear that we won't be able to get out on the water (30 knots and 15ft swells), I think we should just call it off and re-schedule for later in the summer.  Our sponsors would want the prizes going towards something meaningful rather than hacking together something 2nd rate at the last moment.  And I think we would want to maintain something meaningful too.

That is pretty much what I was figuring regarding the sponsors.  I'd feel the same way if I donated a big prize.

Yaquina Bay Rockfish and Perch as a back up sounds like a good backup venue.
Biggest fish outta the Siletz (no species requirements), I don't particularly care for, as there are several large species that could be caught and not everyone would have proper tags or gear to target them.

If the back up option is blown out too, but the river is still safe we could do as Pole' Pole' mentioned and cancel the tourney and reschedule.  Then just have a group party to utilize our reservations and food that we prepared.  While we are hanging around camp, we could do a group paddle up or down the river, and maybe so some scenario based rescue practicing.
