I'm thinking.........................................what were we talking about? I'll let you know. :-\ It's been a long time since we fished together. I have a good Butt rod and reel but don't know squat about the terminal setup. Keep me posted by PM.
Rich

Hey, no worries Fishnut1.  If you can bring your rod and reel geared down to the leader that you plan to use, then I'll have enough terminal gear and bait to cover you and me both.

If at first you don't succeed....  maybe skydiving is just not for you.

Hey guys. I've got a St Croix 6'6' rod rated for 60-80 lb test and a Penn 113H Special 4/0 Senator reel. Is that good for Butts and what type of line should it be rigged with? Any suggestions? Also, what would be good for lings as far as rod/reel and line? Terminal gear for Butts/Lings? I'm stoked!! Wild horses couldn't tear me away(only my wife but she gave the nod). I've actually have 2 Shimano Tritons loaded with 50lb Power Pro and a couple of 7' rods I've caught Dino's with.

I've caught 'buts on steelhead and mooching gear- 20# test (braid), with jigs as small as 4 or 6oz curly tails.

The thing to think about with heavy gear is- what are you going to do when you hang up a jig or spreader on 50# braid? Chances are, you're going to be anchored, unless you cut it with a knife! That's not a good scene in heavy current and/or big swells. A weaker, 10-20' topshot of mono in the 20-30# range will help, if you don't want to re-spool. I prefer lighter line because I'm sometimes trying to hit bottom in 200+FOW, with a strong current. Thinner line lets me hit bottom, and stay there, with lighter jigs. A bite leader of some type can deal with their teeth, though I often go without. (Boaters will sometimes use braided wire leaders!)

I prefer rods that can handle up to 16oz. A rod rated up to 4-8oz can often handle this, since I'm not casting.

There's been lots of conversations about this topic over the years, so if you search, you should be able to dig up plenty of more ideas.

I'm running 50lb braid main line, and I'll be using a 30lb mono leader.  I can break that off pretty easy, and if for some reason I can't, I have 900 ft of line on my reel.   My life > 300ft of braid.

I run 50 braid and 50-150 leaders. I had to break off 3 or 4 time last weekend and was able to do so in pretty shitty conditions. Fish with what ever you are comfortable with. I will be running either my ling set up or a slightly heavier 'but set up that I am working on. Depends if I am able to get my room mate to join us.

Pisco. Are you saying that we anchor up or just with heavy line if you get stuck on the bottom with your terminal gear, you're anchored and that can be a bummer?
Thanks for a reply.
The Butt Virgin.....no pun intended. :o

I don't know anyone around here that anchors for halibut. Most of the water is pretty deep and the fish are scattered, so it's a good idea to drift and cover ground. I know some of the charters in SE Alaska anchor in fairly shallow areas, as shallow as 30-50' FOW.

What I was trying to convey is that if your gear is too heavy, and you snag bottom and can't break off, it can be problematic. 30# gear has been plenty heavy for me, and takes an amazing amount of pressure to break off..

When I do hang up, I try and get up current of the snag and bounce it loose. If it's really deep with a big current, that might not be very easy to do.
