Hi all, Just found out about this forum and have been kayaking and fishing for about 5 years. (More fishing than catching)... I started with a Cobra fish & dive, nice & stable with lots of space for gear but too tubby. I then got a Wilderness Tarpon 140 which is a very sweet yak. Outfitted it and did some lake and river fishing around Eugene where I have lived the last 7 years.
I built and lived aboard a 39 ft trimaran sailboat for about 8 years in California and always wanted to get back into sailing, so just bought my newest yak, a Hobie Adventure Island. I currently live in Lincoln City and just started to outfit so hope to have it sailing and fishing in a few weeks.  Any other adventure Island owners out there?

Welcome to the board, Mike. :hello:

Besides Yak Monkey, I think Zee still has an AI, and I think The Tall Man does too. Probably forgetting some others. ::)

Fish sniffer and I..   There's a guy in Washington who has your package if I remember right..

I'll be looking for you when I get a chance to catch calm enough ocean out of PC or Depoe Bay.  I always have wanted your model: I have owned a couple of sailboats and thought I might head out further with a rig like yours, say after salmon!

Thanks for the replies and while new to the coast I'm looking forward to being on the water again. Just finished assembly of a Trailex aluminum trailer that is made for this yak. The whole boat is a bit complex to take apart, load on the roof of my truck and reassemble at water.....then disassemble again... when I should be on the water more. Just finished mounting rod holders for trolling, and mounted my Hummingbird FF.  Just need a bit of better weather to do the 1st sail. Will probably do Devils Lake here in Lincoln City. Hope to try other areas as I learn the area.

Hi Mike,

I am a full Adventure Island owner as well and have it rigged for fishing :) I have fished mostly with just the Adventure, but that's going to change. They are amazing machines. Like you said though, you want to work out some kind of a trailer setup. A few of us should catch up some place on the salt to do some serious fishing some time.

You built your own trimaran? Wow, you must be great at rigging a kayak.

Hiya, sorry for the delay.  I just finished my trip up north to Ketchikan.  So, yes, I do have and dearly love my Adventure Island.  Most of the fishing I do is based out of the kayak hull only, as you would expect.  I've been waiting for a long time to find some other guys who fish and own AI's.  I've had my heart set on running the length of Puget sound in it, but have been waiting for a partner in crime  >:D  I've only seen the fittings that are on the new boats, and am jealous of some of the improvements that have been engineered into the newer models.  If I parked my '07 next to a new boat it becomes obvious that changes have been made.  The only part I'm missing in order to consider my boat complete is the trampolines.  I may have a set soon, if I get lucky....

Cheers, and let's look to putting together a sailing/fishing outing some time this fall.  I'll be back in Washington mid September or so.

Cheers, and have fun with the AI.  It's the most versatile watersports machine I've ever seen.

Hey Brian,

I should mention that Mary from Western Canoe was really happy with your enthusiastic help a little while ago during one of their paddle days. Now some rumor has been started that you might be even more maniacally fanatical about the sport than I am... let's not get carried away here lol! I'm sure there can be two people that are just as crazy  ;D

I would definitely like to do a big AI trip on the central BC coast or somewhere else where you're gone for a couple weeks and can really get in to some nice waters. The way things look for me this year though, it's a 2012 idea...

We will catch up and we will fish.

Good luck with your guiding season.

maniacly fanatical?  Me?  hmm.... I'll have to consider that one...  maybe just really enthusiasic.

I'm glad I was able to help with the paddle day for the folks at Western.  It was a bit nippy, but I was surprised at the interest and customer participation that came about that early in the season.  I was glad just to get the sailing gear wet again, and the gusts made it nice and fun for a few minutes.  Made 7 knots for a little bit, then I decided to head back in because I didn't want unfamiliar folks following me downwind out farther into the lake.

Ha ha, enthusiastic is good enough.

Talking about this has made me change my mind on how I'm going to do things this year. On my one trip to the salt, I was going to avoid using the AI just so I could enter fish in the AOTY. Now that's maniacally fanatical. I'm from the interior and just don't have that opportunity very often.

I don't care if I can't enter fish, I'm going to use the full AI so I can enjoy it.

Why not sail it up the inside passage, it'd really save on gas! :P

That would be an amazing trip, TM.  Lemme know when you have the sail kit and I would be more than happy to assist in the addition to your boat...

I'm dreaming of getting the Hobie Mirage Tandem Island soon (within a few weeks). I've been demo'ing the Adventure Island the past three Thursdays out of Sellwood Park on the Willamette courtesy of Next Adventure Paddle Center. Those guys are really great. Anyone interested in checking them out should consider coming to their big demo day on June 4 from 10-6 at Sellwood Park (Portland). Hobie will be there and (I hope) will bring a Tandem Island for me to try.

It's been a very long time since I was a fisherman. Back in '63-'64 I was a fishing guide in Yellowstone Park and now that I'm retired looking forward to learning all over again.

This forum is fantastic for getting tips and ideas from the veterans. Once I get my Tandem Island it would be great to meet up and learn in person.

Let me know if anyone is interested.
