This is something I have worried about this spring.  I have had sea lions following me around, luckily I have not had one near me while I have a fish on.

The California sealions aren't too bad.  They're usually pretty easy to intimidate (unless you're playing a fish).  The stellars.....well, they scare the crap out of me.

I actually got the most freaked out by a Stellar yesterday that i ever have been. I was out by myself about 1/3rd of the way to Simpson Reef and this sea lion was cruising south about 75 feet away and as soon as it saw me it turned and headed directly at me, at about 30 feet a started yelling and waving my pole around and kicked the Hobie into high gear north. I guess it continued south after it got it's kicks f.n with me. I think that's the most scared i have ever been on the ocean. Those damn things are frickin huge!

This has really got me thinking about packing my Hi-Piont 9mm with me. Seems a silly defense swinging a fishing pole at a 1500 pound animal...
See ya on the water..

You and me both. I started thinking that after having 'lions roll next to be last year under sellwood, and hearing/reading accounts of them wanting to board the kayak.

Could always add sea lions to the AOTY. Joking aside I'm glad that this fisherman lived to fish another day.

I had some fun with a harbor seal back in 2009. I can't imagine what that would have been like with a sea lion instead!

Last summer down at CBY's AOTD fishing tourney pre fish, Yaksurf, PNW and I were fishing the North side of the light house wall of Sunset Bay.  PNW had beached his yak to climb up on the rocks to retrieve some muscles, Yaksurf was about 50 yards west of me jigging for fish, and I was being harassed by a HUGE Steller.  He popped up several times around me to snort, grunt and growl at me.  I boogied away from his fishing grounds and radioed Yaksurf about it.  Just as I was getting some chatter going between us, I could see the same Steller heading directly for Yaksurf.   Warned him, and he had to move too.

I so want to toss one of them fur bags a nice tasty fish pumped full of Dave's Insanity Sauce, or Liquid Stoopid.
Just once, I'd like to see fear in their eyes as they look at me.   :angry5:

Is that caliber enough to handle them?  Do they hang out like harbor seals with their head above water just staring at you?

Probably not enough caliber, but perhaps the sound will hurt it as much as it will hurt you.

The sea lions I've seen don't seem to tread water the same way the harbor seals do.  The sea lions seem to just keep moving.

Back in the 1970s, when I was scuba diving, I was off the Dungeness Spit, surfaced to get a look at where I was and when I turned around I was staring right into the face of a harbor seal about 3 feet away.  Startled, I almost shit my wet suit.  At first glimpse it looked like some old man.

I don't really want to kill the things, just scare 'em. Unless it was really close and aggressive. This ones big ole head was out of the water the whole time.

Then just use bird bombs.
You can get them at most farm supply stores.
If you go with the other option you want FMJ ... the extra penetration is much more favorable to quick expansion.

Just remember what that handle on your net is for. Don't ever get your fingers caught in the net or you can kiss a few digits buh-bye when a big bull tries to take your catch. Would probably be a good excuse to buy a Hobie if you can't hold a paddle anymore.

Good read on what is and isn't allowed for deterring Seals and California Sea lions.

http://www.nwr.noaa.gov/Marine-Mammals/Seals-and-Sea-Lions/upload/Deter-Pinnipeds.pdf
So does that basically say that you can shoot at seals and sea lions with painball guns if they're attempting to steal/damage your catch?
