i am wiring an older Lowrance fishfinder this weekend. (I'm not home at the moment to get the actual model #) does anyone know what size of fuse most ff use?

Perfectly good topic for discussion as I'm sure you're not the only one to have that question(myself included).  Check to see how much current draw your sounder has.   I would say that value times 4 or 5 would be a good bet since most sounders used for kayaks are probably in the 100 to 500 mA range.  I also have 3 amp fuse in mine and it draws less than 200 mA I think.

In a water environment you are protecting against short-circuit, which could melt your wiring and perhaps some of your boat, but probably not harm the FF (no guarantee!).

The Lowrance user's manual is probably on line and probably lists the operating current.  Or put an ammeter on the running unit.  Consider 1.5 times the normal draw.

Current vs. fuse rating:
