My friend who is new to kayak fishing but not kayaking and I will hit the Newport Jettys 6/12 Sunday.

I was just wondering If there is a good place to rent SOT kayaks from, as my friend needs a boat. Or if anyone is around and can offer to let me borrow one I'm happy to pay a fee for the use.

thanks, all sorted

My only concern is that the rental boat doesn't have a safety flag, but I'm thinking of using an old 6' fishing rod with a bright orange piece of something on top. Something is better than nothing, I hope the local authorities don't bother us too much...

Flags are not required under the OSMB regs(they are required for the ORC ;)).  They are a great benefit to yourself and boaters around you though.  An old pole with a piece of vivid orange material will work fine.  Just make sure you have the stuff listed on this page and you won't have to worry about the :police:.

ok thanks for the tips. I have the safety stuff already except for the flag. Hes gonna be in an OK so my Adventure will run circles around him ;D I may end up giving him a tow!

We will rig something easy to see and I'll bring the portable air horn as well.

I picked up a Uniden MHS75 VHF radio on sale as well to add to the pile of safety gear.

After thinking it over, hitting the Newport jetties instead of Depoe Bay may be simpler for my friend who does not have a lot of kayaking experience. We can fish near the finger jetties and work our way towards the open water.

If the weather looks good and I get my wife out this week on her Revo that she bought me. I might be able to come down with my Revo and Outfitter. Her first time in a Hobie was awful 50-70 MPH wind at Salmon river. We got to the beach and was blasted by sand. I had to take the whole family back across the river(multiple trips) in three to four foot waves that were turning white. She never wanted to go in a kayak again. For the past three years I've wanted a Revo and she went and bought me one two weeks ago. After my daughters tried it out and loved it she had to go out. Now she's hooked. I'm going to start talking about a tandem AI next.

Doughboy, this upcoming Sunday looks better. If the forecast holds it will be a ~1' Wind Wave, ~4' Swell kind of day!

I am taking my friend and likely his cousin to the Newport Jetty for my friends first time fishing on the coast. Lets hope he catches a nice ling ;D

Yea the Hobies are unbelievable fishing machines with the mirage drive. Hands for reelings, feet for pedaling. It makes a big different around jettys where the wind and waves will smash you against the rocks unless you can keep your bow in the direction of the drift and keep pedaling. The adventure is so damn fast, I clocked mine with turbo fins cruising at 5.0-5.5 mph. as nearly as good as all but the narrowest of sea kayaks.

Went out to Newport 6/11 hitting the Jetties at slack tide. The north jetty was easier to fish from as the wind was ~10kt NW. Nice Black Rockfish and a 27" lingcod.

My friends holding up our catch.

Nice work!  That's a nice ling for being inside the jetties!
