How hot are we talkin for crispy, 450?

You don't need it that hot.  You'll tend to burn the fish at that temp while the center will be raw still.  350 is sufficient, but the problem is maintaining that temp.  Usually you'd like more oil than the amount of fish you are cooking it in.  Otherwise the temp drops immediately and take a while to warm back up, all the while your fish is just soaking in warm oil.
