Kayaking around The Dalles

The wife and I are thinking about taking the kayaks out east tomorrow to check out The Dalles.  Anyone know of a good spot on the Columbia in that area for easy kayaking with access to panfish habitat?  Preferably somewhere out of the wind. Salisbury Slough next to Mayer State Park looks like a cool spot from overhead.  I would like to check out Lake Celilo above the dam, but I'm thinking it will be pretty windy.  Any ideas for must-see places in that area are also appreciated.

Any info on the area at the mouth of the Deschutes too.
