The best thing to use is dry silicone spray for the chain and cable system. It's spendy. WD40 works to  but i like to make sure and wipe it off the rubber flippers.
I also dab a little marine grease on the crimped parts of the cable/chain and the main shaft. doesn't hurt to dab a little grease on the clips that hold the drive in too.

Rinse it every time you use it especially in saltwater and give it a light spray with the lube for the longest life.

Thay are pretty durable...

I always carry a container of water with me and give the MD a rinse (assuming salt trip) before going home. At home I follow-up with a good spray from the garden hose. Every 2nd-or-so trip from the salt, I lube it with Break Free.

Good read if you haven't: http://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=12577

Pretty much the same here.  Spray it off vigorously with fresh water when I get home.  Lube every couple trips with WD-40 at every place parts move against each other.  I also put together a spare parts kit I carry in the truck.

(1)   V2 Chain assembly
(1)   Turbo fin replacement
(1)   V2 replacement injection molded sprocket
(1)   Pedal strap replacement (right)
(1) Pedal strap replacement (left)
(2)   Turbo fin replacement mast (Threaded V2)
TOTAL   125.70

Great tips guys. Cool thing about the MD is that it's not a fragile piece of hardware. If you're rinsing it w/ freshwater and check up on it every now an then it'll keep on trucking.

The way Hobie owners talk about them, I'm pretty sure they keep their mirage drives in their bed and cuddle up next to them at night.  :)

That is one reason I bought one.  My elbow is messed up.  Also, It does make beer drinking easier.
