Just got back from launching in the Cove at Seaside.  Maiden voyage for this Revolution kayak.  Forgot to strap down net and lost it in the surf.  An hour later I hook the biggest Chinook ever.  Probably about 35 pounds.  30 minute fight and had him to the boat 5 times.  With no net I was helpless.  Finally got off.

The net I had would have been too small anyway.

Anyone have a folding/collapsable net suggestion?   Let me know and I'll share the name of the lure I was using.

I just get the 28 dollar Salmon nets from Bi--Mart. They collapse and if you do something stupid(I'm on the second one) it doesn't hurt so bad.

Thanks for the reply.  I am in Cannon Beach with no Bi-mart near.  Would you by chance be able to recommend on online?

Does the mouth of the net fold too, or just the handle?

the cheap one i have is a frabill

yopu could get a net directly from Frabill but it will end up pricey. They don't sell the real  cheap ones.

how about Wally World?

Sports Authority has them, more expensive plus shipping.

Congrats on the hook-up, bummer on the unintended release.  Problem with fighting big fish is, the longer it goes, the better it is for the fish, as the hook gradually wears a hole in the jaw, and eventually the fish can roll and slip the hook.

Sorry about loosing such a nice fish.  Especially after having it up so many times

I bought a neat net from Cabelas.  It folds in half so the net is pretty good size for salmon and the handle slides up into the net about half way - like a lot of others.

I used to use a bigazz oversized bag (like super hoop, salmon sized bag) retrofitted to a smaller hoop net. I got that from Dennis Spike a long time ago and have used it with a Cabela's folding net to take a 30# halibut.

I've since upgraded to a short handled frabill 18"x24" hooped net  (~$20)  fitted with this 48" deep re[lacment bag. I like the short handle because its easy to control near the boat. The next size smaller actually said it was a "kayak net" on the label.

A couple of rubber bands keep the bulk of it out of the way when not in use.

It has a really big bag.

It must work really well because all oversized salmonids seem to know to stay away from my boat. ::) It has netted some hefty Redfish though.

I just quickly replaced my lost Promar LN-702 with a $60 Frabill Conservation Series I got at Outdoor Emporium.  The handle has a telescopic extension and the shaft releases and slides into the hoop for storage.  20"x23" hoop with knot less rubber netting.  Compacted for storage it is 44" long, fully extended it is 57".  I needed something quickly.

This is not really a recommendation since the net is still a virgin, just an option.

I like FFTW idea for a large replacement net held in place with rubber bands.  Do the rubber bands slide off when you put it into use or do you have to manually remove them?

Manually.
Although they pop off easily, If I'm netting something big enuf to warrant using the whole bag, I don't want any added resistance.

Makes pretty good storage too. Just leave the fish in the bag, flip the net over and secure it face down on the boat with the bag in the water. Although, like a stringer, that may not be such a good idea if seadogs or other toothy critters are a problem. (here its alligators)

I've been following this thread because my net is simular to this....

It's fine for trout and midsized Steelhead but anything over might be a problem.

That colapesable Frabil net looks pretty sweet.  I have a cheapo folding triangular net which is pretty flimsy and need to be replaced.  I hope someone buys the Frabil and provides a review!
