Hello to all!

I am new to the site and wanted to introduce myself.  I found the forum about a month ago and believe it to be an excellent resource.  I was introduced to kayaking while attending school in northern California, but just recently purchased my own kayak (arrived yesterday).

Most of my yak experience is using them to reach dive sites or drop off crab pots.  Now that I live in SE WA, I will be fishing the river systems which I lack experience in from a yak.  So, it should be an adventure! In about a week we should have a pretty decent run of fall Chinook coming through my area (Snake R.).  I am excited about the opportunity to catch a big fish from a small boat.

If anyone has tips for fishing the Snake below Lower Granite Dam I would love to hear them. It seems from the post that most of you are on the west side of the states. If there are members in my neck of the woods it would be great to hear from you. I plan to have my maiden voyage on Sunday and will post the outcome.

Welcome.  I can't help you with the Snake  River but one of the best ways to learn how to catch fish in a new area is to see what the guys with the power boats are doing and copy them.  I think there are some guys from eastern Washington and Oregon on this board so you should be able to find some yakking buddies too.

So basically, talk way too loud, keep your sound system up so everyone around you for 1/4 mile can hear it, leave trashy camp sites with your fire still burning or at least some good hot embers blowing into the dry grass, throw your trash in the water and remember not just mono for the birds to kill themselves with (trying to use it for nesting material), but also fish of all sizes are attracted to power boats because they love to dodge beer bottles and cans. Finally, if you could leave a trail of oil and or gas, that would improve your odds greatly.....just like the power boats >:D

No Sir, I have not fished in your area, but every other body of water there's power boats present, its always the same b.s. There's a saying, "Instant asshole, just add alcohol" I think it should have been, "Instant asshole, just add power boat" Oh, and for the record, my opinion (ranting) is in no way meant to dis ndogg or his comment. I'm certain he meant well and having met him recently, I can personally state that he's an alright sort of guy and a very well informed angler. I also meant to say, Welcome to the forum FishPimp, but got side tracked by one of my favorite pet peaves.....frickin motor boats!!
Here's one for every one of them that has no respect for other watercraft or anglers in general  :thebirdman:

I wonder if it is a freshwater versus saltwater thing?  I see many, many more asshole boaters on the fresh than the salt.  In the few years I've been kayak angling I don't think I have ever heard loud music on the saltwater.  On the salt mostly the PBs are fishing just like me.

I am guessing it is because of the generally much younger crowd that are wake boarding, skiing and pulling inflatables on the fresh water.  The loud sound systems are now stock on many of the wake board boats, and all aboard are in that "Hey everyone, look at me" mode.....   Granted I sure wouldn't mind being time warped back 30 years so I could be like that again.
I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

You could almost make an even split between boat owners and the kind of boat they have.

Like Ndogg says copy the power boat in your area, but only if they are aluminum and don't have pontoons.
Avoid the fiberglass ones, those are the party animals.  8)

Insayn, thanks for clarifying my point.  There are a lot of asshole boaters out there.  If you can find the true fisherman, not just the guys who want to drink and maybe catch a fish you should be ok.

Is it just me, or are the screen names getting better and better?  Fishpimp is solid, and Bankmaggot is a gem.

Welcome to the site and the sport.

I have noticed a few that need to buy a vowel, though.  ;D But I will agree with you on Fishpimp and Bankmaggot.

Thanks for the informative and entertaining comments everyone.

I took my yak out for the first time yesterday and it was awesome!  No fishing, I regret to say, but I took a step back and thought that maybe I should have a get to know your kayak trip.

So, I hit the river and practiced strokes, self rescues, and scoped out territory for smallie fishing that was previously inaccessible. In reservoir conditions this yak takes some work to flip. I felt like I would have to have a serious brain laps to flip it unintentionally.

All in all a great day.  If any of you ever get over to the SE side of WA let me know.  By that time I may have a decent fishing trip to offer.
