think of it as another tool in your already formidable and hard won arsenal after all the hard work you put in to get all those shiny little badges to append to your profile. now, if you end up with one the size that Zee landed....    that indeed will mean we are not worthy of your gaze...

Not sure if anyone cares but I thought I would sort of close out this thread with my decision.

I was really tempted with the handline   but I finally decided on the Buzz Ramsey 8'6" 2 piece 15-50lb test rod. I waited a week or so looking for a sale but in the end I just bit the bullet. I figured I can't catch a fish on a rod that is in the store

I checked the drag on my old 6500 and it felt good so I loaded it up with some 30lb yellow braid (I think it is power pro) and I think I am ready to go I really like the light weight of the rod - I think it will be a blast to fish with. I realize another bonus is that it will make an OK surf rod for fishing from the shore (a bit short, but OK) .

I just wanted to thank everyone for all their comments and help.

According to the scorecard, you took a 3MPH handicap.  Just cause you hurled and curled on the way out doesn't make you handicapped my friend.  I saw the fire in your eyes when you slipped into your suit.

We need a re-match.  I've since learned there ways to overcome the speed difference.

Same exact rod (XH) I have been using for years.  I love mine.  It is a very nice all around rod.  Good choice if you are looking for one rod to do it all. 

Your instincts are good.  For your next rod consider the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger (BWC 2201-2-270) you looked at previously.  Up to 6oz casting, 50# line, 2 piece, 7' long, medium action.  I don't use it for casting (the reel I have on it sucks for casting), but trolling and bottom fishing.  It is a sizable step up in stoutness from the 8'6" IM8.  I usually carry them both.

I use an older version of this rod that I picked up at a garage sale. It works well for both rockfish and salmon. I have a Penn 350 Leveline reel on it which I also love.

You certainly can't beat the price!  This is the outfit I was using when the seal towed me around for a half hour. If it can stand up to that, then it can stand up to just about anything!

Also, I use 50lb braid with usually a 20-30lb mono leader. I haven't had a problem breaking either line off. I just wrap the line around the rod handle a couple of times and using both hands, give it a big yank. I had something big on at last years ORC and the braid actually broke above the 20lb leader. I think it hit a rock while under tension. The 50lb braid is also easier to see and tie then smaller diameter line.
