Hello fellow yakkers my wife and I will be moving to the Bremerton/ Port Orchard area right around christmas time with the Navy.  I just sold my Parker 2510wa and have downsized to a couple hobie PAs.  Are there many couples in the area that go out fishing together?  What is the fishing like in that part of WA?  My salmon fishing experience is limited, but I'm sure it wont take me learn to learn the tricks.  Anyway just looking for some good information about the surrounding areas, and what i am really getting myself into.  Thanks for any help.

Welcome!  You found the right place to get those answers!!!

The only question I think I can answer is "what i am really getting myself into?"

I'd say an addiction where the cure is one of the coolest things I've done in 4 decades of fishing!  Just really started myself this year.  I have two power boats and neither got started this year!  And the best part??  I caught more fish than EVER!

Welcome aboard!

Oh...
One thing I'd love to do if I was in the Bremerton area would be to get some underwater lights and go squidding!  What a blast and tasty little things if you like that kind of thing!!!!

My suggestion is to hang around the site.  Read old threads and articles, use search.  Ask a bit more specific questions.

I have no idea how many couples kayak fish together.  We have freshwater lakes, rivers, and streams, inland salt water, and ocean salt fishing.  Lots of different species from bass, perch, trout, muskie, walleye, and more in the fresh, to salmon, lingcod, flounder, sturgeon, and more in the salt.  Water is cold most of the year so at all times we dress for immersion not for the air temp.

Good to have you aboard.

Flyry-

Welcome shipmate! Unfortunately, I hadn't yet discovered kayak fishing when I was stationed in Bremberton, and I spent too much time at sea to be afforded much time to go fishing- even on a power boat. What I do know, is that you need to start reading up on the regs for that area. They can be a bit intimidating to know where you can fish, when, how deep, and what you can and can't keep.
Secondly, discover kayak friendly launch sites and take advantage of that aspect, and I wouldnt limit yourself to just the Bremberton area. There are ooooodles of places to check out around there. Check with MWR if they have access spots on base or other resources for you. Keep an eye on the forum here. There are meetups in the sound area.

Finally- as demonic stated- immersion gear could save your life. That means "dry-wear" such as drysuits, or drytop and bottoms, and good layering underneath. Ironicly, the first drysuit I ever owned was a flight crew "poopie" suit. LOL!

Flyry another great thing about the waters in Kitsap and Mason county, namely the Hood Canal, is the crabbing.  I tried setting pots with my kayak this year and had a blast.  Here is a shot of how I have mine set up for it just to give you and idea....
