Okay, so welding skills are very perishable.  Especially if you have not welded since 1991.  I obtained a broken Hobie scupper cart and took it upon myself to make it whole again.  I found a welder and switched the wire and gas over for stainless steel.  That is when I found out how I lost my ability to make a nice bead.  I used to weld at a summer job for a couple years while in college.  I haven't done it since... can you tell.

Oh, and I angled the photo to make it look as good as possible. :-\   Well, at least I know the welds are strong.  I had to crank on it to spread the uprights out to the desired width after welding.

I intend to modify this like firebunker's so I can switch between my beach tires and a set of harbor freight tires I already have.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!! I will bet it will hold better than the factory weld ;D

That was the good one.  ;D  The others got a little bit of grinding and polishing.

Craig, just wait until you see me weld.  My only training was in middle school industrial arts class.

Fish won't notice. Function over form any day.  If ya can get both, great. But I seriously doubt you'll catch fewer fish!

Did you borrow/rent a welder or use the project as an excuse for a new tool?

That's my usual excuse.   :headbang:

My usual excuse as well.  But to answer Demonick's question, I borrowed one.  I wish I had a welder.

Anyways, the cart  works awesome.  I had the yak fully loaded and it was so smooth.  Look out George Rogers Park ramp, no more minor strokes and heart attacks for me. Also, no more strapping a cart on that likes to collapse at the most inopportune moments.  The Wheel-eez cart I have is great for my other other Yaks, just not for the Outback.  The Outback hull shape does not work well with it.

I love the Harbor Freight wheels because they have  ball bearings, unlike the plastic bushing the brand name carts use.  It will work extremely well for freshwater hard ground launches. Saltwater may not be so forgiving on the bearings, which is probably why plastic bushings are used in the name brand units.  I will put my wheel-eez tires on for the beach and salt launches.

I put a washer on the inside of both sides to prevent the bal because I wanted to.  I drilled a hole through the axle on each side, slid the wheels on then ran a stainless bolt through each as a temporary fix for keeping the wheels on.  I will buy pins when I the the chance.

That may not be a stack of dimes, but it looks good to me! From what I understand, grinding and polishing a weld only makes it weaker. If it ain't breakin, I'd leave it be.

Get the pins!
Sand, mud, grit, (insert your favorite cruddite) will get into the threads and they will not want to come off. damhik
A couple of linchpins are worth their weight in gold when that happens.

I have learned much from you and your DAMHIK posts Sensei Fishesfromtupperware (although the "leash it" posts always seem not to sink in.  Which is why my primary sturgeon rod and reel had the opportunity to "sink in" the Columbia River yesterday  :BangHead:).  I will definitely be getting the pins the next chance I get to go to a hardware store.  I drilled the holes for the Wheel-eez sized pin.  Now I just need to find some.

Get spare pins.  I had a couple of the Wheelez stock pins pop off in brush.  I converted to these.  Whatever you use - carry spares.

I too have lost those pins before.  They hold a lot tighter in one direction than the other, and you already know how I know.
