  what he said. i run mine like a slider from a perimeter line. doesnt matter surf, lake or pond. my first huli taught me a lot. 

I like leashes, but a lot of folk that I respect, don't.

No leash when in the surf.  I've rolled on a large day and had the paddle jam under me, snapping eventually when going over the falls.  Costly mistake.  I also like to come in backwards on all but the smallest days, facing the waves and paddling backwards so that when a bigger wave comes, I can position and or push through it.
