U.S. v Oregon Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) Report on 2012 Forecasts for Spring Chinook, Summer Chinook and Sockeye
December 12, 2011
TAC met November 30, and December 5-6, 2011 to complete the 2011 run reconstructions and 2012 forecasts for Upriver spring Chinook, Snake River spring/summer Chinook, Upper Columbia spring Chinook, Upper Columbia summer Chinook, and sockeye. All forecasts are expressed as adult returns to the mouth of the Columbia River. These forecasts will be updated in-season as actual return data becomes available.

Columbia River Mouth Fish Returns Actual and Forecasts:

2011 Forecast          198,400

2011 Return             221,200

2012 Forecast            314,200

TAC used a log-normal sibling regression model to forecast the 2012 4-year old returns from the 2011 Bonneville Dam jack count. Log-normal models appear to work relatively well when jack counts are large, and the 2011 jack count at Bonneville Dam was the second highest on record.

Looks like I am going to be spending a lot of time on the Columbia this spring.

I have never gone springer fishing before - sounds like it will be a good time to pick up the habit!

Very happy for you guys. Your systems are showing a good trend. BTW For those who want to get on the fast track to kayak springer success, call my boy Ron @ groundswell guided kayak fishing. He'll hook you uuuup!

I think we'll have to have an outing sometime on the weekend in the spring when us non-retired folk have a chance to fish together.

Looks like OFW is spredicting 83,500 springers up the Willamette River in 2012. It's gonna be a good year.

Sounds like a Springer Fishing for Newbies clinic is in order.  I think this year I'll do both a "classroom" seminar and an on the water "lab".  I'm shooting for mid March and I'll post something up as we get closer.

I can get you guys introduced to Springers but if you want to maximize your potential, book a trip with Groundswell Guided Kayak Fishing.  Ron is a springer fishing Guru and can outfit you for both safety and success.

   I always liked "lab work".

I'll be looking forward to that class... :D

Sweeeet! How does fishing for springers differ from techniques for the chinook derby in Puget Sound we've been discussing? This will be my first winter and spring fishing the PNW.

Hopefully the water conditions are right this year for Kayak fishing the big C, last year I ventured out of Chinook Landing early on in the springer season and the currents were wicked fast, I ended up hog lined up with some PB by the Camas slough for a few hours without a bite.
If it wasn't for flashbacks, I'd have no memories at all.

You guys are too nice ;D  There are a lot of accomplished Springer Slayers on here, I just tend to spend more time on the water than most ::).  I'm putting the full court kayak press on them this year! Ditto on hoping for good water conditions, it makes a huge difference.

Today, Thanks to Next Adventure, I added a Hobie Oasis Tandem to my fleet.  Should be a Spinger killing machine and a great way for those new to yak fishing or a specific fishery a way to access the fishery without having to worry about boat control etc. Concentrate on learning the technique and leave the driving to me ;D
