I know you all have things to do but any idea on when the AOTY 2012 stuff will be up?  I'm already planning on a keeper sturgeon trip Jan 1 or 2 or both......

Anybody that will be McNary is welcome to join me.

AOTY has already got me thinking about fishing trips 6+ months out :P

EDIT:  Wait a second.  I was just re-reading the AOTY rules and stopped at #7. The biggest fish from each angler's top ten species will be used towards the anglers total points.

For clairification, if i caught all 20 species, only the top 10 species scores count and the other 10 are thrown out?

(Bell goes off in my head)  Now I get it.
Yup, you got it!

I see this morning that NorCal Kayak Anglers already has their sign-up for 2012 AOTY going.

  I'm sure the NWKA's will be starting sign-ups soon.(hint,hint).

She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

To make things interesting, points are going to set randomly for each species each day.  Catch a 35 inch steelhead on the wrong day and it's only worth 35 points.  Catch a 6 inch panfish on the right day and it's worth 600 points.

Yes, I'm kidding.

Hysterical! That would be kind of annoying though. :)

Although we did toy with the idea of having a sort of progressive scoring in which you could bump someone down by entering a bigger fish than they entered.  That thought didn't last too long, but maybe someday.

Anyone see anything against throwing a few zingers out there throughout the year?

Say, at each of the other tourneys that go on throughout the year we draw a random fish out of a hat, and then draw another random number out of a hat (say 1-5) and this would be a points value.  At this point, anyone with that fish already in their AOTY score card (including caught during that particular tourney before the drawing) would gain this many additional points per inch for that fish.  Later on in the year if the angler happens to catch a longer one of said fish, the points would add up the normal way without the bonus points.

So, at the end of the year we would have at least 3 or more point "zingers" applied to random fish.   And those points only apply to those that have already caught said fish.

That sounds way too complicated.

Would that only apply to those that participated in said tourney?  Or would everyone with fish in that specied benefit?  I'm thinking it might not be very fair to those in AK, BC, ID, etc to loose out on those points because they could travel to the ORC or something similar.

All folks registered and happen to have the randomly chosen fish already in their AOTY bag at the time of the draw get the boost in points.  Those that haven't caught said fish yet (and this could be everyone) doesn't get the boost. Nobody would know what fish it will be until it is drawn.

It's merely an idea, never to be taken seriously.

How about a review of the rules?  In particular, I noticed some odd decimal points this year.  .99?  .01?  Really?  How about to the line it touches on your solid measuring device?  If your board has eighths of an inch and the fish touches the end and that eighth, you got it.  Board only go to quarter inch and the tail goes past it but not to the next quarter?  Sorry, only what it touches.  I see some loose tape measures out there.  I know this is supposed to be a tournament of the honor system, and meant to be a good time for those in it.  But when you work hard for your fish and see that you're beaten by a questionable picture...  That would suck.  And with serious equipment up for grabs, there is room for some ill feelings.  I know with the larger fish, we're not able to use the hog trough.  Maybe shore pics with the flexible tape is ok in that scenario.  Too big and catch and release?  Honor system would have to do, but perhaps that's up for discussion.  I entered this year but didn't get a chance to fish.  If I enter again next year, I'd like to hope my entries are solidly beaten by everyone else!

It is a good thing I have a tape measure with millimeters then.

Even better!  The metric system always will be superior.

The .00 and .01 were added to fix a bug in the system.  They were in no way meant for preciseness.

We're likely not going to have any species change in 2012, although we're considering some minor points per inch tweaks.

-Allen

When I was chillin' on the Siletz yesterday with my fly rod in my hand I got to thinking. Part of the allure of AOTY is targeting fish you wouldn't normally target. Along those lines, maybe there could be a bonus for targeting fish differently than you would normally. Maybe a 10% point bonus for 1 of your 10 if it were caught on a fly?
