I've never lost a rod overboard, and I hardly ever leash rods.

-Allen
Never lost a rod and I used to do surf landings with the rods still in the holders.

yet.

What's worse is the sound it makes when it does go over.....

almost none at all. DAMHIK

The rods were in the holder during this landing but now I have a rod pod so I can try and fish even worse water!!

Like this .... It was her 3rd time in a Kayak

That would be a clown hat on Kai (aka Spatter).  He hadn't bothered to take it in the house (like he'd been told) so he got to wear it on the river.  Sure was fun watching the "what the fug is that kid wearin'?" double takes by the PB'ers that day.

That's where Spot attaches leashes to his kids.

I am having trouble remembering what my reply to the subject was going to be because I laughed so hard...

As a kid,  I was responsible for my Dads pride and joy rod and reel going over the side of the boat because of a bone head maneuver on my part.   I think I am still grounded to some extent for that one.
Maybe it is due to that event that I feel compelled to have a leash attached.   To reduce the "getting tangled up in" factor I keep them pretty short and a velcro strap that will detach from the rod without too much effort.
I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

.  Would attaching a leash to the rod clamp screws be a better location?  I feel like down there would keep the leash from getting tangled in anything a little better.

Thoughts?

I think that would be the best place.  Use clips on both ends of the leash.

I first attached my leash to the rod clamp. However I kept getting tangled in the reel handle. That is why I switched to the blank above the grip. However after reeling in every 5 minutes for 7 hours to clear my line on Thursday the leash still got in the way some percentage of the time. I think will go back leasing unused rods only - especially if actively/constantly using the rod.

The solution I found to keep from having issues with the leash getting in the way of the reel handle is to make sure you have the wrong lure or bait attached to your line.  This way there is no need to reel.

Try it, it works great for me.  ;D

I had not thought of that solution. Plus it keeps that fishy smell off your hands ;D

I Don't know if a rod clamp with an extra hole to leash it down is in the market for your reel, but I'm sure you could fab or find an extra piece of of steal/aluminum piece to secure it between the clamp and reel with and extra hole.

I'd try looking but you can also ask these guys if any of their rod clamps would work.

If you are able to get one then I'd recommend a lease similar to these (clips on both sides of leash for easy attach/detachment)....http://www.google.com/imgres?q=kayak+leash+clip&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1396&bih=615&tbm=isch&tbnid=CbCPuFOn8tAmfM:&imgrefurl=http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/showthread.php%3Ft%3D6394&docid=SWl6jBfkr0mKSM&imgurl=http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/533/leash_004_Medium_.jpg&w=800&h=600&ei=JzkBT9bHNumSiQLvtY2OAg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=1097&vpy=307&dur=623&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=154&ty=217&sig=116002891134768368527&page=4&tbnh=118&tbnw=158&start=60&ndsp=22&ved=1t:429,r:21,s:60

I only use the leash if the rod is not in my hands.

Just zip tie (black looks the best) a large split ring where ever you want it.  Makes fast and easy leash attachments or simply as a hook keeper

That is it!  There you go.  Thanks!

Here is another one I've found by Penn.  Only problem I see is it's from UK and I'm not sure if the it fits all rods.
