Just make sure not to post two fish with the same score.

Yep, that is an issue.  When two of your top species have the same score the query that calculates your total score get's messed up and only counts one of them.  There's an easy work around, just tweak your measurement on one of the fish by 1/100th of an inch.

Entering multiple fish for each species isn't going to affect this bug because it only concerns your top catch from each species.

Wouldn't it be easier for the guy who wrote it to spend an evening with a 6'er of stout, chasing down the offending code?

Well this post may qualify me for a @zzh@t recipient or as we say in my line of work an @zzclown. It may even shake up the hornets nest. I did read through other posts before putting this on here too. I am hoping that next years AOTY competition will be balanced to all the locations that are eligible to participate in this competition. It may even draw in more members and donations to the competition. Right now it seems to favor WA and OR. Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho and Montana don't have regular access to the same fish. Is it possible to add more species like Grayling, Northern Pike, Catfish, Sheefish, Arctic Char or fish specific to a region that can't be caught in WA or OR?
My motives for asking this is I am from Alaska for one, second by the time our waters thaw the Army will have sent me to Podunk,Mississippi and will be living a miserable existence because I hate hot environments. But at least I can fish there. If not then that's OK too because I retire soon and will be moving to Vancouver, WA where the odds will be more in my favor. So please I ask that you give Montana some consideration because apparently a river does run through it.

This is the time of year to talk about species for next year.
I would like to see pinks added to the species for next year.

Allen-
Is there a plan to raise or lower any point per fish? There are a few that seem high and a few that seem low. Do you look at an average and assign a trophy size at the end of the year? Or is it more just shooting from the hip?

Seriously, I am comfortable with the fish we have.  And points per inch don't matter as long as we are all using the same points.

Oh man, did you see the points from last year?  It's a lot better this year.  Which fish are you seeing trouble with right now?  (points wise)

Well, except that the reason for the different points/inch is to try to equalize scores between species to make them all worth targeting.  If one has too high of a value then those without access to such fish are at a disadvantage.  Conversely if one has too low of a value then why would anyone bother to target them at all (if points is their motivation anyway)?  Tweaks are entirely fair to consider.

I'll second FG's suggestion of adding pinks.  Other than that I like the species list as is.  I plan to participate in 2013.

I guess I don't remember. I thought there were only a couple of minor changes from last year? Off the top of my head I'd probably bump Lingcod, Coho, up and drop Chum, and Cabezon down. Maybe a couple other tweaks.

As much as the "guy who wrote it" loves a good stout, believe me when I say he has tried to fix this bug several times.   Without a major rewrite of the the entire underlying control structure, switching from SQL based queries to some advanced activerecord-fu ranking and sorting algorithms, this bug is going to persist for awhile.  If anyone out there is a Ruby on Rails expert and would like to lend a hand in fixing this bug, send me a PM.

Until then, let the annual bickering about species and points continue...

Other than cabazon I think the changes last year are pretty close to right on for points.
Has anyone mentioned that only four of the five salmon species are on the list. 2013 is a pink year....
