Was just showing the site and explaining to a non fishing coworker about aoty. Dude is really impressed we can fish for so many different species in so many places. Even more so when he found out what some of: the prizes are.

You do realize that there are still 34.5 days left don't you?  That's almost 10% of the contestable days.  Plenty of time for upgrades if you're serious about winning.   ;D
No shizz. CBY usually makes a strike this time of year and there's at least 3 other guys to watch for gunning for second. Fat lady is still in the wings warming up.

The only two time AOTY winner did so out of a paddle kayak and isn't sponsored. Most still believe that Spot isn't mortal either, but that is a topic for another thread.
If you want to see some crazy competition go check out NCKA's AOTY.

Most of the time the winner comes from north of the Golden Gate. Geography comes into play a lot. I still say OR has a leg up on WA with more fisheries.

Wow that is crazy points and Striped Bass? Catfish,Sea bass? also on their fish list helps a bit, Some realy nice weather place's to fish there too,,Like Santa Cruz, montrey, and all the Big Bass lakes, and Shelter cove too. Now see why they have their own AOTY site. I wasn't kayak fishing much when I lived there.

it certainly is an interesting thread.  Mind if I weigh in, even tho I'm not a competitor?  Why thank you.

(seriously, feel free to disregard - I'm injecting my opinion in a matter that has nothing to do with me)

Living in WA and seeing what you Oregon dudes catch has me slobbering with envy.  I'd agree with Zee that OR has the leg up.  A bit.  However...

Knowing both the guys in #1 and #2 spots, I'd say it is coming down to skill rather than access to huge fish.  Yeah maybe some luck too...but I don't think anyone is gonna question FG or Jammer's abilities to sniff out the big guys.  If it was *just* access to fish, FG woulda won last year too.   Heck, if it was just access to fish, the AK folks would win every year!  AK has a **HUGE** edge over both OR and WA.

foggy bay folks launched and landed from terra firma.  if they were to be disqualified for taking a boat to where they were launching from, you'd prolly have to disqualify anyone who took a car as well.  As far as I can tell, any AOTY competitor can fish anywhere in the Northwest and register their catches, as long as they are launching and landing from land.  Few range far though, because life tends to get in the way of fishing :( So I think those, like FG, who do "go the extra mile" should mos def be allowed to enter their fish.  It's not easy to just go up to foggy bay and fish, it's actually quite hard!  Which is why most of us haven't done it.

Just my silly ass opinion.

But I tip my cap to both of you for a banner angling year (so far).  I hope y'allz keep it interesting til the end.  I love seeing the fish you post.  you two are at top for a reason.  you're quality!

Well said Rory.  As another entertained observer, I agree.  Now where's that popcorn?

That is funny because I have been seeing all the chum you and the other Washingtonian's are slaying and that 3000 cast (  ;) )steelhead of yours  and I am wishing I was up there. Grass is always greener I guess.

But I will agree, Oregon rocks for fishing.  I love Depoe and PC.    I plan to get a Washington license this coming year, too.  Pinks have me excited. I will most definitely be heading back to Grays Harbor again next year.  That place is awesome.  Anyone up for fishing for pinks next August 11-14?  Or is that not the right time?  I may have finagled a way to get up there for "work". >:D

Yeah pinks are gonna be a blast!  They should be startin' to show up around early/mid Aug, IIRC.  They come in ahead of coho.  You sure do plan ahead! :)

Love you Rory! "YOU"RE MY BOY BLUE"!!!!!

My hat is way way off to Fungunnin for an AWESOME season(so far) this year. I would also like to give props to the other top 10 anglers who have all been bustin their butt's through rain, wind, sun and snow to post up some huge fish so far this year.

Jammer out!

Speaking as the guy who has held firmly onto 29th place for the last four months, I like the rules fine the way they are. I don't think there needs to be any leveling of the playing field. I hope there are twice as many participants next year.

I am not up on all the rules, but is there a consolation prize for those who catch the biggest fish in any category? maybe win an NWKA sticker???

Bottom of the AOTY home page.

The top entry in each species will get a prize (TBD).

It would be nice to know what that prize might be.  Or at least Fungunnin would like to know.   ;D

PROGRESS IS JUST BEING THERE!
