I added a Scotty laketroller to my rig over the holidays but have found that while in use I get quite the whine from the what I think is the downrigger cable vibrating.  I didn't notice much difference between fishing 10' deep or 50' deep nor did I notice a difference when I changed from a 1 lb to a 2 lb cannon.  Maybe this is typical with all downriggers, i've just never noticed it over the sound of an engine or the vibrations on a PB.  Do I need one of those Scotty snubbers?  More weight? Could it be the mount allowing the vibrations?

I'd recommend replacing your thick downrigger cable with some spectra line.  What test spectra?  Well it depends, you have to balance the chance of breaking it off with the ability to break it off if you need to.  Personally, 50 lb spectra is probably fine.
Spectra line..
less whine,
less drag,
less expensive,
and easier to cut if you get stuck.

As Mr. Steves indicated, the 'cable' part is your problem.  Just replace it with braid.

a 4# weight is just right for the little laketroller, and may cure the hummmmmmmmm.  Didn't one come with it???

+1 on the spectra

I personally run 50# power pro braid with a 10-15 ft piece of 40# mono at the terminal end. The mono makes it easier to tie your swivel clip, and adds a little give when you cannonball getts cranked hard up against the downrigger arm in the heat of the moment. I lost two weights this way (even with the rubber bumper) before adding the mono tip. No problems since.

Thanks guys, I like an easy remedy and the additional benefits that bsteves mentioned are a bonus.  I'll pick up some braid and mono and swap it this weekend.  My laketroller never came with any weight and the two local stores I tried only had 1,2 and 8+ pound in stock.  I'll take a further look around for a 4 lb'er.  Thanks again!

bsteves suggestion of 50 pound test spectra line is right on........I have both a Scotty and Canon mini-troll down rigger using a 2.5# weight.
You will find the deeper you down rig, the more "drag" is encountered and the kayak will naturally turn in the direction the down rigger is deployed.
I have a Hobie Outback and found that changing the standard rudder out for the sailing rudder kept the kayak tracking where the rudder was positioned.
Lastly, I prefer the Canon over the Scotty due to the simple line/depth counter on the end of the arm.

I haven't tried this, but once you have braid on your downrigger I don't see any reason you can't add on an aftermarket line counter.  They run about $12 and companies like Cabela's and Bass Pro both carry them (your local shop may or may not).

That is an interesting idea......my old Scotty has about a 5/16" diameter SS rod that a counter could clamp onto.....

One could also use a light colored braid and mark the braid with black felt pen every 10, 20 and/or 50 feet.
