For some time I have had a strobe attached to my PFD (see post #14).  Periodically I test it and it has failed.  On close examination it appears a large inductor broke loose.  This is the unit:

You can find them on Amazon for about $18.  The price is right, but clearly if they can not withstand normal usage, then one can not rely on them in an emergency.  Photos below of the failure mode.  Looks like they need a better glue.

I have this version, which appears to be a lot simpler in design.  I've had it since 2000, and it still works.  Has a built in safety pin style clip.

Simple generally works better in harsh / destructive situations.

I bought mine at REI, but I can't seem to find it on their site anymore.  They probably sell something more expensive now.
