The wind today is expected - it's gale warning through this evening.  Tomorrow should be fishable, especially in the afternoon, and the weekend forecast has stayed rock solid:  VERY FISHABLE!

See you there.   :)

C'mom guys, how'd ya do?

Exhausted!  And yes, I got skunked.
My strategery failed due to heading north right out of the gate.
The current was ripping north bound at 2.5mph, and after 2 hours of pumping pedals at a 4mph pace, I didn't seem to get anywhere.  Tried jigging at various rest stops, but would completely lose all the ground I just covered trying to get out to the red can.

I finally had to retreat, skim the shoreline and head in for a piss break, water (forgot mine in the tent), and shovel some food in me.  Got back down to the launch and hit the water again.  Made it back out on the water, and went looking for my team.  Just about then a huge fog bank rolled in north bound and completely buried us.  I went ahead and just switched my FF to the GPS screen and focused on helping my boys find the right path back to the other side of Pilot rock where they could make their way in safely.   Dana's battery petered out while he was way out there, so he and Paul slowly wandered in until they found me.  I pointed Dana in the right direction, and continued to stay out with Paul as a buddy boat until he had his fill on casts around Pilot rock.

I did catch a handful of crab Friday, and several under Lings on tourney day.  But, I really screwed up my day by going north right off the bat.  It was hell without water on board to drink.  Upside to my dilema, was I didn't have to clean any fish!   ;D

Besides that, GS6 was totally awesome and wayyy worth the trip!  Long drive down, but clear and sunny all the way.  I was blown away by the amount of generousity of the masses in camp and on the water.  EVERYONE got along like bros, and accepted us NWKA guys like one of their own, but that might have just been the Ninkasi working for us?  :-\

Eric put down one hell of show, and was on it like clockwork.  He didn't miss a beat with his plan (that I could tell), and kicked out some great prizes to well deserved winners, including someone on team NWKA.   ;)

For the huge ass potluck, Kayak Jack let me spin tortillas on the UFO for him in the Taco Shack, and we killed it!  Many many many happy folks got their fill on battered fresh fish, clams, and veggies for their taco's.

Now, back home I can't wait till my first day off work to completely catch up on my sleep.  I'll clean my gear the next.   8)

Will post pics later in the week.

Thanks again Eric!

Here's my report on NCKA:

That was a total blast.  Way to go to everyone who participated and helped make the event a success.  Thanks to all who helped out - especially Big Jim Russell for taking care of happenings at camp and my daughter Claire - I could NOT have pulled it off without her help.  I'm so proud of that kid!!  A big thanks to Brandi and all who helped with Gyotaku at the campground after Saturday's fishing.  Thanks to Ryan Howell / RHYAK too - you're a good friend and a man with a big heart.   :smt001  Matt Mattison was there spectating and was a huge help too - thx!   :smt001  Also, a huge thx and WTG to Kayakjack - GREAT TACO BAR!!   :smt007

It was great meeting a bunch of new people and getting acquainted with some who I've 'known' through NCKA for many years.  It was great to have ChuckE show up and wow us with his sailing machine and killer smile.  Great to meet you in person, Bro.   :smt001

The water sucked until Saturday morning when we got a reprieve and it was fishable pretty much all day.  The bite was average to mediocre for the Cove, but with that many hooks in the water some outstanding catches were inevitable.  I want to thank the group for making an effort to score even if it wasn't your best day - the team scoring and filling in stats on the scoreboard really benefit from full participation.  The "average" score was a lingcod and a rockfish - pretty damn nice average!  Here are some killer stats:

153 people signed up
137 of them made it to the Cove
119 of them recorded a score, but 136 fished on tourney day
Out of the 119 who turned in a scorecard there were:
- 102 lingcod scored (many got limits, so we probably took 150 lingcod on Saturday!)
- 111 got rockfish
- 43 got cabezon
- I think 27 got greenling
- 4 salmon were caught legally
     - Domenic got a 31"
     - Salty got a 33"
     - Ernest got a 32" I think, and
     - Rob/Matanaska got a 29"
- 2 other salmon were caught on rockfish gear and were released
- 1 pacific halibut was caught on tourney day by DerrickA2H - 40"
- A couple other pac hali's were fought that day including one that reportedly would not even come close to fitting into the biggest salmon net - heartbreaker for brdopry, but what a great experience to have!
- Salty released all 4 Rock/Ling species and then bagged his king, so he won it outright and undisputed - WAY TO GO, Jim Jackson - you rock!
- Biggest lingcod went to Randall / Bigfoot - 37.5 inches, and brdopry got a nice consolation ling at 36"
- There were several 8 to 10 pound cabs up to 24" - Andy1976 bagged two beauties!
- 22" may have been biggest rocky by Snapperhead

Sunday started out crappy, but the afternoon was very fishable and several of us stayed out past dinner working on finding salmon and enjoying the rocks and lings - Jonesz got his first ocean salmon around 29" - WTG, Glyn!

Today was THE DAY!  It was so flat, calm and sunny it was like Tahoe!  The bite wasn't super red hot, but some special fish were caught.  Randall, who already had big ling honors, pulled in the 56 pound / 50.5" pac hali - it was a BRUTE!  WTG, Bigfoot!!

Jim Meier / Rockfish had a monster on but it was too big to get off the bottom - fun fight though I'll bet.  Kayote / Ed got a nice ling around 20 pounds.  I was trolling salmon with O2B and checking my trolling speed with his GPS.  We decided to hightail it over toward Randall to see him fight the halibut a few hundred yards inside, so I started paddling hard with my trolling gear at 30 pulls and I hooked up a salmon going 3.3 knots!!  It came to the boat too quickly, I flailed on a net attempt and it went under my boat and rubbed the hooks off on my keel!  Damn!  It was cool though.  Later, after much trolling to redeem my loss, I hooked up again and this king was a slob - I saw the brightest flash of silver, white and blue, and it was long!  I couldn't budge this fish for a few seconds and then it darted right at me and under my boat like a torpedo.  It too rubbed my hooks off as it passed under me.  Lucky I got those early season salmon or I'd be bummed right now!   :smt005

Got to put Randall's big hali on my Trophy Trough, which the fish eclipsed!  And then a cool local named Tommy York (Boogieman's son) came along and did an awesome Gyotaku of the halibut.  Very impressive and cool.  I bailed out of the Cove at 4:30 so I could get to mother-in-law's for dinner at 6PM.  It was sad to leave, but NCKA will be back at Shelter Cove soon I'd say.   :smt001

You guys are awesome.  I had to keep my game face on and stay focused on getting everything done or I would've lost it and let my emotions get the best of me.  Presenting a Sportsman of the Day ten inch ab to Sonny Nguyen / Sailfish for putting his ass on the line to help one of our members was an honor and I'm very proud to have been a friend of Sonny's for several years now.  Well done, my friend.   :smt001

And now some visuals:   :smt001

(Here's a few pics, but there are way too many to post them all - go to the post at NCKA to get the full run-down and everyone's pics   :))
See you at Gimme Shelter

NWKA was very well represented by Paul, Craig, Dana, Dino, Edwin and Roland.  You guys are lucky to have these guys as members, and I'm sure the quality, sportsmanship and brotherhood they brought is representative of the entire club - that's why our clubs are siblings - our family is the best!   :)

I announced at the potluck/awards that the NWKA members present were our guests of honor, and the group reacted with love - you guys will definitely be invited next year.

A big thanks for all the contributions and good energy you guys brought.  Thanks for coming.   :)
See you at Gimme Shelter

A big thumbs up for Eric.  :icon_thumleft:  We all had a great time down at GS6.  We made it down there late Thursday afternoon and set up camp.  Thursday the the wind was howling I had to put up rope tie down to keep the tent from blowing over.  By Friday morning the wind had died down.  Friday PNW and I went ab diving while the other guy's went crabbing.  We had about 1 1/2' of visibility which made for some very poor dive conditions I also had some gear issues.  On Saturday morning we woke to a very calm ocean.  We launched early and fished inside a bit I picked up some small lings inside.  We all decided to go to the outside buoy I would spend the rest of my day trying to get to that buoy.  There was a strong current ripping us to the north and every time I'd catch a fish it would rip me north again while I was taking a pick of it.  I ended up catching 4 (Greenlin, rockfish, Cabizon, & Lingcod) of the 6 species that we were targeting all a little above average.  So I thought I was doing just OK.  I did 2 drifts for Halibut and decided I should switch over to salmon gear and a fog bank rolled in fast about that time my battery on my gps died.  So I headed in with about 12+ kayakers to end my day of fishing.  I ended up placing fourth.  Mid afternoon they had a gyotaku (fish printing) station set up for people who wanted to make prints of there fish.  The pot luck was incredible.  Insayn fried up the tortillas on the UFO and PNW brought the Ninkasi.  PNW thanks for diving with me.  Insayn thanks for driving.  Eric thanks for putting on this event.  Thanks our NCKA brothers that made us feel like we were part of the crew.  It took me a solid day to recoup from the trip.

Like Yaksurf and Insayn mentioned. The north current wore us down pretty good. I was able to keep a ling, rockfish and a nice greenling for some decent points.

That looked like a blast.  Great report guys.  I think I know where I am going next Spring.  Should we see if NWKA can put together 2 teams? I also want to give the Gyotaku a shot.  What kind of paints were used? Acrylic?

Craig, you would totally fit in down there provided you like to eat and fish?

I think it was Acrylic paint used.  Very fossil looking when done right.  Just wish I could have bagged a keeper.
