First the wallpaper came with the house.  I feel it gives the garage a nice quaint feel.
Wives or at least my wife makes a horrible tensioner.  I tried to have her help me spool a few spinning reels once. About half way through the first one the spool was spinning around on the floor and my wife was nowhere to be found.
I am going to refine the design a bit by adding a permanent clamping system to it but for now my big clamp works.
Yeah I tried to have my wife help me with it once. After I told her she wasn't applying enough pressure and then told her that was too much.....it was back between my feet :)

I don't ask my wife for help because then she will know I bought a new reel. :)

Great write-up Nate.

Nice setup ndogg. At work I use the regular machine but in the back downrigger repair area, we
use a power drill setup just similar to your setup. Way to use your head in coming up with a great method.

Thats why I use my 10 year old as a reel motor, and I control the spool. Only problem is I have to pay him off to keep quiet about daddy's new purchase.
If it wasn't for flashbacks, I'd have no memories at all.

My two spool holders typically fight over who's turn it is.

Timely thread. My new Penn Sargus SG4000 arrived yesterday. Its a sweet looking and feeling piece of bling. All metal. No reverse, just solid and exceptionally smooth forward cranking, and a 6.2:1 gear ratio. Best feeling spinner/spoon/surf-perchin' reel that I've ever held in my hands! Maybe not so good for jig/float fishing, though, where I like to reverse crank at times when controlling the length of my drift. I'm not sure I want to risk taking this out on my Tarpon, but it would be killer for tossing jigheads to rockfish. It will be leashed!
I am still going to order a larger capacity Salt Striker combo, though, for taking out in my Tarpon.

Will hold 230 yds of  most 10# mono, which is the same diameter as the 12# P-Line CX I am spooling it with. Otherwise, it only holds 170 yds of standard diameter 12# test mono. That's at least 100 yds more than I can cast, so its good enough. In my entire life, i've only had one or two Kings run off more than 100 yds of line at a time. One of those times I had only about 20 wraps left on my spool.
My new Sargus will hold 205 yds of 30# braid.

I hope my toes don't cramp up! I'll just jam whatever I use for a spool shaft between some heavy wood blocks with weights on top, figure out some braking resistance for the spool to prevent overruns, and maybe even run the line under a large towel for added drag. Ya know, somebody should invent something....

I remember seeing the phonebook trick in an article of Field & Stream when I was a young teenager.   I wanted to quickly put the idea to work but we lived in a very small town with a phonebook about as thick as a Denny's Menu.  We did have a huge Leather Bound, Gold Embossed Bible that apparently had been in our family for several generations.   My Mom walked in and saw it sitting on the floor with me dragging fishing line through it.  She thumped me over the head with it before returning it to it's place on the shelf, along with spouting some  Old Testament terminology of what would happen to me if I ever tried that again.
I guess my Mom was a 'Bible Thumper'  ;D

I also use a couple of similar large spools / drill for stripping as well as reversing line on reels every couple of seasons.  I will strip the line onto one spool, transfer it onto another spool, then back onto the reel.

I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't
