A few moths back there was a thread about keeping ling baits like greenling or sole alive. This looks like a pretty cost effective/easy solution as long as you aren't covering a ton of water between catching bait and fishing.

A bait tube is easily made from PVC.  4-6" diameter 2' length, drill a lot of big holes, one end capped the other with a cleanout plug, add leash, add bait, toss in water.  I've seen them in Hawaii.  You could probably find a PVC basket screen for the closed end.

Can one legally use live bait in WA?

Yes in the salt. Greenling and sole are frequently used as big ling baits.

Thanks.  Somehow I got the idea live bait was illegal in Puget Sound.  That's going to change my ling fishing habits.

How does one rig a greenling?  Through the nose?  With a stinger at the tail?

I think Rory had a write up on here about it somewhere.  Through the lip/nose and mid-way between the dorsal and tail seems like it should work.

Any way they can still swim and use big sharp hooks. Set the hook hard! Or they wount get stuck.

I have rigged this way and had ling grab the middle and miss both  the hooks. Run the trailer hook to the middle of the fish. Lings will usually grab a fish from below and try to rip there guts, so if it's to big to eat whole it wont swim away when they take another bite.
See ya on the water..

Thanks.  I've rigged live bait in Hawaii, so it's not a foreign concept.  I did learn to not hook them through the lower and upper jaw, cause then they can't open their mouth to breathe.  Good tip on how lings attack.

I use a bait tube here in FL for Pogies and they keep pretty well (and that's REALLY saying something). But that's driving a Hobie.
I tried it in Baja and it doubled as half of a rod case for shipping. But I also found out just how much drag it is in the water. :o Pedaling with it is a WHOLE lot easier than paddling with that puppy. That was no fun at ALL.

You could probably find a PVC basket screen for the closed end.

Floor drains make good caps that flow water well.

Would it be too off the wall of an idea to attach the bait tube to your anchor trolley, and pay it out to the rear so that it more or less just trails behind you while moving/paddling?  Then pull it up along side the yak when it's time to rebait?
