I have officially started to twitch! I am jonessing to get out in the salt and Lingcod season is still 4 months away!!!
So when I can't go fishing I end up fussing with my gear and buying more gear. While searching around online I came across some deals on musky baits. I got to thinking that a musky and a lingcod really aren't that different of critters, other than the whole fresh water/ saltwater thing.
So my question to you guys is:
Has anyone ever used musky sized baits, specifically spinner baits and spinners for lingcod?
Looking at these right now.... and you know I love me some Kalin's.
2.5 oz Kalin's spinner bait

One issue might be that spinner baits are generally shallow or surface lures and lingcod are bottom fish.  Muskie and lings may be different sorts of hunters too.  Lings ambush, muskies pursue (I think).   Lingcod tend to hang around structure and spinners work by moving horizontally through the water which seems like a recipe to lose a lot of gear.  However, "the proof of the pudding is in the eating", so try it and see what you get, then report back.

Lings may be ambushers, but they DEFINITELY pursue.  Out at Hobuck this past summer I watched 3 and 4 lings at a time pursue the same bait, with 2 of them following Rav's presentation even after all the bait was in other ling's mouths.  I threw my offering at the cluster of lings and one immediately broke away from the pack and hooked himself on my line.  I think they'll go after anything that looks tasty, and the only problem you'll have with that type of presentation will be keeping it down near the bottom.

It will also pick up big rockfish.  That fat vermillion I picked up last year was done by retreiving a curly tailed grub, not by bottom bouncing it.

These spinners are 2.5 ounces so it shouldn't be hard to get it to run 30 or so feet down. I want to play around with casting these on the edges of kelp beds. Home to mostly underlings but could be some fun having a ling hammer a bait being retrieved rather than jigged.

A better question might be "What won't a Lingcod hit" 8)

That sounds like fun. Nothing better than watching a fish smash your lure!

BTDT.  Works fine, but results for me were no better than any other bait.

What I want to do is try casting an a-rig for lings and rockies.

There you go making me Google bass terminology.  That A-rig seems cool but Wa law only allows for two hooks...

I've caught rocks on spinnerbaits so I don't see why not lings.  I have a nice 1 oz. spinner that gets to where it needs to be pretty quickly and the fish seem to like it.  I've even used it in lakes to catch largemouth that are hanging at the edges of weedy shoals.  2.5 oz. would certainly work for working areas less than 40 feet.
Catching most anything on a spinner is a kick in the pants.

Then put hooks in 2 trailing baits.  Leave the others as hookless teasers.

Is that the game where you tie a twenty to the end of the line and troll down 99 to see how fast they can run in heels?

Hookless Teasers, Teasing Hookers, Toothless Geezers - It's all fair game for AJ
