I have been using this unit since last August and am really impressed.  Here are some pics of the 798 in action.  The first image shows a salmon.  The lower side imaging shows the salmon as well as foliage to the left and woody debris and foliage to the right.  The second picture depicts swimming fish as white streaks (also salmon). Note the dark shadows in the lower left side of the screen, those are pilings.  For you estuary SRC fanatics, using side scan almost isn't fair. The third picture shows a tree in the middle of the river.  Lets see if anyone can guess what the image in the last picture is.

I have this mounted on my ultra 4.7 which was designed with an insert under the hull for the transducer.  What about thru hull installs on other kayaks?  The Consensus is that it will not work, not sure if anyone has actually tried this.  Since I have an extra Transducer that is portable for use on other boats, I will give it a try in the hull and see if it works so stay tuned.

If you were in salt water I'd say the last pic has the shape of a small Orca.

Not a Whale, lives in the salt water though.

Yeah, thought it would be too small for an Orca.  But that really looked like the dorsal fin.  Maybe it's a sea lion flipper instead.

Yes, it's a sea lion that was stealing the fish heads out of my crab rings at the mouth of the Columbia.

That is very cool. I like how you can see the path of the fish as it swam through the pilings.

I was trolling spinners that day but if I had the bobber and egg set up I would have been over there asap.

Is the above link the same kit that you are using?     This is a very nice looking/outfitted yak.  Do you know of anywhere in the Seattle area where one can be demo'd?    I think there is an Ocean Kayak retailer in Redmond, but don't know if they carry this one.
I got into my first yaks this past summer, but I shopped for the family, and never really made the plunge into my own angling yak.  As much as I like the idea of Hobie Mirages... I like how this one is setup better.

Wow! Great images. Does side imaging send two beams out that are 180 degrees apart or does it send a vertical  image with a wider cone?  Amazing pics. I'm a little jealous. Anxious to hear your results of your experiment. Great report.

Quadfather, I was to impaitent to wait for the OK mount so I built my own.  Here is a pic of it.
Not sure if the local shops have one in stock right now but your more than welcome to demo my ultra. PM if interested.

kfshr, a beam goes out each side and you can choose to shoot the beam from one side if needed which I sometimes do.  I should have some time to play around with a transducer from inside the hull this week.

Here it is, my mythbusters test.  Will the DI and SI images work when shooting the transducer through the hull? The transducer that I used was on a bracket that I use on my drift boat.  All I did was put the transducer in a one gallon Zip lock bag and set it inside the front hatch of the ultra.  I think the images would have more detail if more time was spent to install the transducer in a more traditional way.  The first set of images are from the transducer in the hull and the second set are not.

Looks like a lot of attenuation even at a paltry 8'.  I'm curious how much of a difference at a more interesting 50-100'.
