Ok, since I am a week away (hopefully) frompicking up my PA, I want to start the search for the right fishfinder with GPS.  I want to be able to update maps and see contour.

Recommendations?

I have read a few threads on this but want to get a recent survey to research :)

How much are you willing to spend?

I've been looking at the Lowrance Mark 4.  It's the cheapest (new) fish-finder/GPS combo that I've been able to find so far, and everything I've read indicates that it's a really good unit (that said, I don't own one so that's very second hand info).  It does have map-upgrade capabilities.  If you want color look at the Elite 4.

Do you have a price range in mind?

I started out with a eagle cuda 250 s/mao and it was a great unit for the price and many guys here use the cuda  250/300's but i really like my new unit alot.

The humminbird 385 CI is a great middle range finder. It has a smallish screen but is super bright and very visible(mine is mounted pretty close to me). The kayak combo has all you  need to mount the transducer to shoot through the hull including battery and batt. bag. The whole finder practically fits in the palm of your hand. Has everything and more then i will ever need.

I thought it was pretty cool that the packaging actually had a kayak pictured on it, we've come along way baby!

See ya on the water..

I'll have to agree with Coosbayyaker.  Picked my 385 ci up on Amazon for less than direct from Humminbird.  Still learning how to use it effectively but it's a great addition.  Wish I could get out on the Willie this weekend but will be in Sun River chuckin' snowballs  at other inebriated individuals while wearing snowshoes!!  Play safe!!

The 365i is a fantastic unit too. I've had one mounted on my X-13 for coming up on two years now and have been very happy with it. The display is 1/2 an inch larger than the 385ci, but its monochrome where the 385ci is color. Been pretty hard to beat especially for it's $299 price point.

yeah I have a 385ci also and its awesome. The sonar is crystal clear the gps and chartplotter have a ton of different settings for making routes, setting waypoints, following old tracks and everything else a kayaker could need. The screen is small but mine is mounted next to the right handle of my Hobie outback so its accessible to change settings or views while steering or fishing with the left hand and peddling!
