I'm still fairly new to fishing out of a kayak. I'm planning on heading to a local lake this week and trolling some of my favorite lures behind my kayak.
I was planning on trolling a f2 froggy pattern quick fish, or a black with gold
blade panther martin, or maybe a super duper or rooster tail.
I figured I'd switch to cast and retrieve if nothing is happening on the troll.
What are your favorite methods for fishing trout out  of a kayak?

For me....I like trolling and casting.  If you have a depthfinder trolling can be very successful.  If you already know good locations...casting it's a bit easier.  Both are fun, you'll just have to figure out what works best for you
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

Either tossing a blue and silver, or green and gold Kastmaster, or long trolling a non floating fly/bug like the black Wooly Bugger.

Try some jointed rapalas for trolling....color pattern matters more than size

Ive actually had good luck with herring and a dodger, well thats all I use. Never tried anything else. My buddy likes those yellow spoons with the red diamonds on them. He catches fish, but doesnt out fish my herring. im not really an expert on lakers. Ive only fished for them a handfull of times. I wonder how those plastics would work like gulps?

I catch a alot of arctic char with cowbells and an earthworm. Its kind of a emberasing setup to use but it works. And I have tried lots of bait/lures for char and the cowbells/earthworm is always tops. Even trolling cowbells/eggs or a spinner doesnt work as good. Char and lake trout are pretty much identical in habits I am told.

This year Im gonna try the char setup for lakers

Either Rapalas in rainbow trout color, or an inline spinner trolled around 1-1.5 or a Wooley bugger in olive or black at barely a crawl will get it done time and time again

I troll spinners to get to where I am going then cast once I get there.  Some of my biggest fish have come trolling between spots.

Then add Vibrax blue fox to the arsenal as well.  I've had 6 to 24" trout attack #3 size in blue/silver and blue/red.

I have a fantastic jointed Rapalas in the rainbow trout pattern. This time of year the fish are a little closer to the surface than in summer months when they tend to hug the bottom.
Are you typically free lining your Rapalas or adding some weight on a 3 way swivel up keep them a little below the surface?

I've got a few in my box. Pretty good spinner. Lately I've been fishing a Blue Fox Pixee (which I use typically for salmon) and have gotten some great results with trout.
They are a spoon with an egg sack pattern in the middle and multi faceted reflective sides. They come I multiple colors and patterns but the chartreuse has worked best for me in late winter early spring.

Does your jointed Rapala look like the one in Craig's video?

Love that Lure.  I have caught fish all year round with that. Caught 2 the first week of Jan with it at the same lake.

Also I have caught fish all year round with the Castmasters.  Smallest size.  Yes the next size up will catch fish as well but maybe only 1 - 4 fish compaired to the smaller size.

PROGRESS IS JUST BEING THERE!

trolling slow with a woolybugger or a wedding ring spinner are almost always fishcatchers.

Just remember to put some weight out front to get them down and troll SSSSLLLLLOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!
