What an epic hit....love the tension while the camera is underwater....was waiting to see a perch or a disturbed yakker come into frame :)
Thanks, D rock.   ;)  Almost one year ago to the day and I can still feel that wave.

Rawk, when you were doing that launch did you have your rudder down?  It looked like you were fighting to keep it straight. I find that my Revo handles like a ball bearing on ice without the rudder down.  And that sucks ass trying to keep it going straight.  My T-13 has more keel and tracks straight as an arrow through the surf.

Wasn't someone here advocating making a beach landing in the surf backwards?  Has anyone tried that. I have yet to huli on landing but have come close and I know my time is coming.....

Yep. ;D

I have not tried it again since last summer and the conditions were fairly small (2'-3') but it worked great!
If you still want to come in forwards. THE BEST advice I've ever received on the matter is keep your paddle on the wave side and lean into the wave (not the beachside). If the wave is turning you to the left (which leaves the beach more on your right side) plant your paddle on your left side, in the wave. It feels counterintuitive at first, but try it and see. Again wash, rinse, repeat, until you build a level of confidence before committing any of your fishing gear to ride along.

There were plenty of things I did wrong in that video.  I didn't have my rudder down, I didn't lock in my mirage drive and I wasn't using my better paddle.  If I had locked in my drive and used it I would have made it through, no doubt in my mind.  I learned a lot that day!

But back to the question.  One big thing to keep in mind when you're coming back in through the surf is that if you get pushed by a wave into a surf, don't try and paddle forward to keep your boat pointing straight toward the shore, but instead use your paddle as a rudder and paddle backwards to correct your direction.  Here's an example (fast forward to about 3:18):

IN many years of kayaking in my SINK in the 1980's and 1990's in Barkley Sound and Tofino, I never had a wet exit except once---landing in what looked like mild surf from the oceanside!! Maybe 24inch waves.....

Well, I finally got to practice in the "surf" at Hood River. Romanian Redneck and I drove down so he could demo two Hobies (he came home with the Outback) and I paddled the Coosa. We went out in the Columbia where the winds were probably 20 knots, check out the Kite Surfers.

I paddled out around the far buoy about three or four times while Paul pedaled circles around me with both the Revo and Outback. It was tough paddling into such a strong wind. The waves were very small compared to the ocean but it was a lot of fun riding them back into the shore. Only once did I almost lose it landing but the Coosa was really solid.

My favorite part was kickin' back on the beach in the really comfy Coosa seat...us old folks need to rest and recover.

I went back in to swap the Outback for the Revo to see how it handles the swells and found Hop lounging in the chair from the Coosa. Only he had it out of the Coosa and on the sand like a beach chair. :)
Those wind sailers were having a blast in that strong wind.

Yeah, watching those kite surfers got my sailing juices flowing. RR and I left Hood River planning to fish Drano Lake. By the time we drove there, rigged and launched the Tandem Island it was already 5 PM. We quickly sailed across to the north bank, reefed the sail and trolled across near the shore. We marked quite a few fish at all levels from bottom to top but didn't get a nibble as we covered the north and west banks. Fished for less than an hour.

By then it was already getting dark so we popped the sail and tacked back into a steady 15 Knot breeze. Too bad I left the GoPro in the car, we had a super nice sail. Not even two Mirage Drives can match the speed of the TI when the wind's blowing like that. Also with the Dry Suit the spray is just like icing on the cake! Can't wait to do it again.

X2 on what Tupperware says about leaning into the wave and burying the paddle into the wave if you are pushed sideways. It will look ungainly as it pushes you towards the beach but it works. Having said this I have only done this in a surf kayak, not in a fishing kayak, so take it with a grain of salt.

I go to
Pacific city semi regularly on a 10' sit on top.... Coming in much harder than going out! Helmet highly advised!!! One of my last trips I was brutally assaulted by a 10'plus wave.... Kayak nailed the back of my head, take my advice it hurts! Lol

Best way I've learned is just what the rest of the gents on here have said, get on the back of a wave, stay there as much as you can.... When all else fails paddle like heck!!!
