Again, impressive work, QuillbackBob.  I really like your ideas.  Did you find the Plus Nuts locally or did you have to order them from somewhere online?  Those look like a much better option than well-nuts.  I'm going to keep my eye out for those.

Yakima rails are installed using PlusNuts - in 1/4-20 I think. Rack Attack. located next door to Next Adventure, is a Yakima dealer and installer, - you may be able to wrangle some from them, although they may have only zinc chromate fasteners. I am looking to buy some in  size 10-32 stainless steel. I have access to a tool to properly seat them in 10-32 and 8-32 sizes, if anybody would like to try them. I would also be willing to go in on a box if there is some minimum quantity from Cardinal.

I have used Strapworks for my yak tie-downs. They are located down in Eugene, OR and are very easy to work with. They will make you up most any strap you need for a fair price, plus they have many standard straps online, plus all kinds of fittings and webbing.

Sherminator is right in that Rack Attack uses the Plusnut zinc chromate fasteners to fasten the rail to the roof of the car.  The size is 10-32 though but the thickness is for sheet metal and is not enough for the thickness of the plastic on a yak.  I called the Cardinal folks and ordered stainless.  They do not have a minimum order and normally will ship the same day if it is stock.  They were very accommodating.  I purchased to C1000 Plusnut hand tool for the 10-32.  The tool will handle thread sizes from 4-40 through 1/4" and metric M4 through M6.  The tool is about $70 so I'm willing to share with those that would like to utilize the Plusnut approach.  Your only cost would be to purchase the thread size if it is different than 10-32.  Hope this helps.
