THis is gonna be a rant more than anything >:(. I really like all the features of the humminbird but its infuriating that they dont list depth capability in the product description. Not even on their website! If there is any info you MUST include  its that! Ill fire off an email and let them know Im about ready to get a lowrance cause its easier to research those!

I went straight to the humminbird website and on the very first page for my depthfinder it gives the depth capability.

I have the Humminbird 597 ci hd di --- love it.  Listed depth capacity in the 160 pp. digital manual that comes with this unit, shows the capacities as follows.

Depths:
For down imaging 250 ft (76meters)
For traditional sonar 600 ft (183m)

I can get down to 500 ft shooting through the hull with their cheap end pirahana max 160.

So maybe compare the power output to get an idea.

The hummingbird website lists the depth.....  Store.hummingbird.com

Yeah some of them have depths listed, some dont, like this one http://store.humminbird.com/products/399598/587ci_HD_Combo

http://store.humminbird.com/products/313974/581i_Combo

The 581i above shows 250w RMS and 2000w peak-to-peak for 800 feet.

The 587ci HD you are interested in shows 300w RMS and 2400w peak-to-peak so assuming a linear relationship expect about another 200'.

The 718 shows the same power outputs as the 587ci HD and is listed at 1000'

Thanks for all the info guys! Now to make comparison charts..... This fishfinder choice is about as hard as the kayak choice! Im thinking I might start out cheap on the fishfinder now and worry about all the bells and whistles later
