After having a bit of a late start I decided to hit GR park for sturgeon. I ended up catching 10 total with about 1/2 of them being about legal sized, attached is a pic of one of the better ones. That fish put up a great fight and made 2 jumps. The first was an amazing porpoise like jump where it came out at about a 45 degree angle cleared the water by a couple of feet and landed back in nose first. The jump probably covered a good 6 feet or so. The second jump was right at the kayak. He came up fast towards the rear of the kayak when I lifted my rod up and back to keep tension I knocked my spinning rod in the river (no leash on that rod). I could not believe it - I think he knew what he was doing :) I did learn something interesting I lost at least 1/2 dozen fish today. At one spot I was marking fish right under the kayak so I threw a tiny bit upstream and let the bait drift so that I was fishing pretty much straight up and down. I hooked 6 fish and lost them all, plush I missed another 1/2 dozen or so. I think that it is really hard to hook fish with a circle hook in this situation. I think what might be happening is that as I started to reel I would lift the sinker up off the bottom, without getting enough horizontal pull on the leader to get the hook to catch. Whatever the reason, I will not be doing this again. When I re-anchored upstream a bit and through downstream I had no problem hooking fish.

The day on the water was nice. I took a peddle up to the island upstream from the launch just for the exercise.  There were quite a few boats fishing for springers but I did not see any caught. I spoke with the sheriff and he said in going up and down the river he had only heard of two that were caught. This was about midday.

Thus, in summary it was a great day to be out on the water, I caught plenty of fish, I learned something, but I lost a rod. Still a huge net positive by my account.

Sounds like an awesome day of fishing. Wish I lived closer!

Sturgeon fishing in the Willie is a blast Rimfirematt.

That sounds amazing Craig but I am too swamped at work right now.

BTW, I forgot to mention that I tried an 8lb mushroom anchor on Saturday. It held well and really was not much harder to pull up than the claw. I liked how quickly it dropped - much easier to get it where I wanted it than with the claw.

If you ever make it up this way make sure you let everyone know. I don't have an extra yak, but I have certainly have more than enough fishing equipment to outfit you for a day of sturgeon fishing!

Damn, you have been killing the sturgeon lately.
Craig it may be a few weeks but I plan on being on the Willamette almost everyday after work.

It wasn't just me. I saw a couple of power boaters kicking dino butt as well. Best of luck to you all if you get out in the evenings. Make me jealous!

How did you do on the Sandy? Or didn't you guys get out?

Thanks Romanian. It is still a work in progress. In retrospect I occasionally wonder if it would have been better to have gone with ram mounts instead of the Scotty mounts. Every once in a while I want the rod holders 1/2 way between the settings. I like using the bungee to hold on the FF. I got the idea when I saw that Craig put his cooler in that spot.

PDX ram mounts are awesome if you're not transporting your yak upside down on they our roof racks. Flush mounts are easier for loading and unloading. Plus there are a million and a half adapters for Scotty mounts above and beyond using them for rod holders.
I'm planning on installing a ram mount in one of my side trays, possibly on one of those new rail mounts. Because its in the tray cavity it shouldn't interfere with loading and unloading.

I mounted a ram mount near the right handle on my outback and it sits below the edge.  But I can never tighten the ram mounts own enuf to hold toe rod in place. I know a few have said it works or them but I can't get them o work o it now my fishfinder mount.

I LOVE the folbe rod holders. Does anyone else use them?
