Spot and Zee are going to join me this year on my annual Sucia ling opening weekend fish slam - first weekend in May.  I wish I had more room but three yaks is about all the boat can handle.

It would be great to have more of you join us on your own if you can.  If you have your own boat (Ron?), you can make the run over from Anacortes or Bellingham, or get even closer and launch from Orcas island.  And if you want to yak it over, its not far from the north end of Orcas.  I see alot of kayaks and small open boats making the run all the time.  Of course it all depends on the weather.

Sucia has some great campsites and fantastic fishing.  Check out this old thread of a trip we took in 2009 for some more info and pics.

Marie and I are likely in for this.  We'll be pedaling over from Orcas.  You guys staying overnight?

Oh wow.  That looks beautiful and fun.  Can't do it this year, but will have it on my calendar for next.

Can't wait to hear the reports.  Do you have links or info on the campsite?  I might look into that for later in the year.

Great.  Yes staying over at least three nights on the boat.  Shallow Bay if mother nature lets us.  There are some great campsites on that side.

mmmmmmm...spot shrimp!!!  I was on Sucia last August, it was awesome, but the salmon fishing sucked, the orcas had been in all week.

Another transportation option:  a water taxi from Orcas.  A little pricey with the kayak fee but cheaper than a weekend in a hotel.

Cool, as long as the weather isn't terrible, we'll be all set for camping.

How far is that?  If I can work it into the budget and get the time off (both from home and work) I'd like to join in and maybe paddle out with you guys.  I figure it would be best to not do that trip alone.

About 2.5 miles each way to shallow bay.  I gotta make sure we can launch from Brandt landing though.  It's right next to Orcas Island Airport.

2.5 to 3 miles isn't too bad as long as the wind isn't whipping.  That's about 2hrs of paddling at a comfortable pace.

Here's a link to a thread on the 09 trip to Sucia: http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,2526.0.html

The guy at Smuggler's Villa Resort (great webcam by the way) just emailed me:  there is public parking and beach access at the north end of North Beach rd.  Here are the distances from there to Shallow Bay from gmap pedometer.

I had noticed that spot but didn't know if it was parking for one of the nearby businesses.  Free parking rocks.

I have a nice 12x12 canopy we can use, but you'd have to shuttle it over.  weighs about 60 pounds.  Looks like there are no reservations for camping over there, so we'll probably head over Thursday after work, or Friday morning.
