Ok, here's the scenario...

Strange turn of events finds me in PDX (O.C.) over the weekend. I haven't fished Springers in PDX since the 90's with my dad. All my salmon fishing these days is on the coast so I'm a little rusty on technique for these fish. So, here are my questions.....

Basic set-ups?? Is it a spinner show? Herring? Other?

Are people fishing the OC area with any success?

For u AOTY hopefuls, I'll trade some insight for a LMB or RBT outing in CO this spring / summer.... Fun times.

Thanks one and all,

T.C.

Springer fishing has been slow with low water temps.

But, trolling herring under the Sellwood is a pretty easy way to go, and not all that far from OC.  Launch right under the bridge, and troll upstream from the eastern column to the docks.

I know that spot better than others, so I'm sure you'll get some other areas from other folks

It's all about simplicity.

Pull cutplug herring or prawn spinners between 15 and 25 feet deep.  If you're fishing shelves or flats, bounce the bottom.  If you're traversing deeper water, 10 to 20 pulls with the same rig works.  Check out the Springer Fishing article on the mainpage for specifics.

Fishing is still slow but there are some fish being caught on both the Columbia and Willamette.
Let us know if you score.

Thanks fellas for the info. I was contemplating swinging a fly on the Hoody but my bro is going to AZ for a game (he lives in HR). Figured I'd dust off the yak for my first outing of the year.

What size herring? Greens, blues, other?

I know that lead is dependent on flow / current but what's average in terms of ounces?

Thanks!

Greens and 4 - 6oz.

Can't believe I'm gonna fish with the weekend hordes but what the hell.

Gotta ask....anybody ever fish the prawn spinner for summer / fall chinook on the coast? It's blasphemy to fish anything other than herring with the old codger (my dad) on the nehalem. But......  :)

The Willamette fished well this weekend, for mid march, (Fished out of the Sled).  The weather was nasty but the Summer steelhead were eager.  Chinooks are still slow but its the same every year, if you work for them you can find a biter. Both prawns and herring got bit Friday (nooks),  Saturday was a plug show (steelhead).  River picked up some color with the rain but should fish fine by next weekend, unless we get more rain.  If I were you I'd troll herring in the lower river (Milwaukie down)

Holy sh*! The river be brown....

Ah well, all is not lost. Stopped by Fishermens and picked up a Mark IV FF for $174.99. Not bad for a FF with gps. Bring on the goop!

The Columbia is fishable. You still around?
