Amazon has lots of them in different sizes but look out for the shipping charge.

Seriously, anyone looking for a real milk crate and on the cheap hit up your Goodwill.

Seriously, I will.  For that and several other things I've heard people finding at Goodwill recently.  But their stock is hardly standardized OR reliable so options are good.

Thanks for the lead.  I will follow up!

One goodwill down.  No crates but they do get one in once in a while.  I did find a helmet that fit my head.  Might need to get a NWKA sticker to cover up My Little Pony but it fits.  Picked up a 5 lb plastic weight for my crab pot too.

Once I got home I searched for "milk crate" on craigslist.  Turns out they MAKE the things up in Kent.

Price is a little steep so I'll be checking out dollars stores, thrift stores, and the other two goodwill locations first but good to know they're right up the highway from me if I really need one.

All that gas you waste driving around. You could have just gone to walmart and bought this for $3 these are even bigger and fit better in most tank wells. They aren't as stiff but you aren't going to load with it 50 lbs of gear.

Or go drive around back of your closest safeway. There's probably a couple stacked out there by the soda crates. LOL

Another great place to check is the recycling places. Those tweakers are usually leaving them behind. I picked up 4 last time and there was still a few left.

After fruitless searches, I bought a couple from duluth trading co and they have served me well. The time and hassle driving around trying to steal one wasn't really worth it when you can buy em for so cheap. That's just me tho! Mime is money.

I am a dedicated crate user.   I love that its open, I have easy access to gear, don't have to turn around and open a case (i.e. all the reasons people use them).  I secure the crate to my outback or adventure with compression straps that have sliding j clips on the strap. Works great.

However, one problem I am still trying to solve elegantly is a way to quick-secure the top for surf launches and landings. Ideally, some kind of tighter-knit stretchy webbing with hooks on each side. Or, heavy nylon/canvas with eyelets i can attach shock cable to. Haven't been able to find the perfect solution yet. Anyone got any ideas?

I am thinking about using some of the fiberglass reinforced screening material you can buy for pet resistant screen doors. I have used it for new heel straps on the Hobie mirage drive and anchor bags that hold rocks or gravel and the empty out at the end of a day fishing.  Would be easy to attach Velcro to wrap over the top when you want to secure the contents of the crate.  Just thinkin....

For a while, Rivendell bikes, and Wald bicycle accessories, sold a small, bungee-net-type cargo holder that was originally meant for bicycle baskets.  Basically a bungee net with about six hooks or so.  Said baskets are about milkcrate size, so they should work as a lid of sorts...

Anyone got any ideas?

I just ordered a helmet net from a dealer in Cali yesterday. The logic was/is, once I get past the surf, after launching from a beach, I don't want to wear or have to deal with my helmet. I think they would be perfect for keeping stuff in the crate as long as it wasn't really small items. See what you think.
