The Lowrance elite-4  http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Marine/Elite-Series/Elite-4/Specifications My only concern is that the screen will be to small. That seems like a lot of info to cram on a 3.5 screen.

I was looking at the mark 4, but this one is only a 100 bucks more and you get color and a dual beam transducer. And Since Im paying for my new kayak and gear with the cabelas card Ill probably get enough points to get it for free coupled with the 50.00 off coupon I have for them.

Im going to use lowrances scupper mount.

Any thoughts or warnings before I put this thing on order?

I did some research and am taking my mark 4 (still in box) back to Fisherman's tomorrow and getting the Elite 4. Nothing wrong with the mark 4, just like the color display of the elite. Yes the screen is kind of small but I'm mounting mine on the side of my outback in one of the utility trays so it should be easily within view.
I heard its tough to have the split screen mode up and see much detail so you may be switching back and forth between gps and fishfinder. You can't beat the price of either unit. My concern with going up a size was:
A) batter drain
B) that the screen would prove to big and cumbersome for a kayak.
Anyway, my two cents.

A) With a 7.2AH gel cell battery you will be able to run for a long time. The current draw for the elite 4 is listed at 250mA. You should be able to get at least 20 hours out of a charge. Note you can not just divide 7.2/.250. As the battery drains, the voltage drops, and the current draw goes up.

B) As for screen size, I am of opinion that bigger is better. The extra space taken up by a larger screen is not that much volume of space. I have a very old X70A that probably has a about a 5" screen with a bunch of overhand on both sides (about 7.5"x5.5"). It is huge and I love it. I keep it bungeed down to the front hatch of my Outback.  I just turn it on, make a couple of adjustments and leave it on until I go home. If I ever get a new sonar with a gps I will probably move it closer since I may want to push buttons on it while I am fishing.

That's why I went with a smaller unit PDX. The Elite 4 has GPS and I wanted it within reach.
Good to know about the estimated time of use/charge.
