Not that it will necessarily do much against a GW, but does anyone carry a sidearm when out in the salt in case of an attach from a pi$$ed off sea lion? I know it's more than "frowned upon" to shoot one, but if it comes at you in a yak I'd rather it be it than me sinkin to the bottom.

It's unrealistic to think a side arm is good for anything other than bubbas on the river.  I always have mine in the dry bag, but mainly because leaving it in the car would be irresponsible.  It's illegal to shoot any of the fur bags, but in theory you could scare them off with the noise.

Same here.

Plus I think having a good knife within easy reach is a more realistic sidearm anyways.  Just pull & poke  ...

You guys crack me up!

Here's what I've learned over my years surfing and yaking:
Grey Wales love to check you out but go out of their way to keep you safe
California Sea Lions talk a good game but back off when slapped with a paddle
Stellar Sea Lions are scary, territorial bullies.  Slowly retreat and let them know you understand.
Great Whites If you see em you're fine.  If you didn't....well, it's too late.
Porpoises treat you like a long lost friend just passing thru.
Dolphins know you're a lesser species but are humble enough to acknowlege your presence and make you smile.
Orcas know they can kill you but have no interest in eating such a nasty creature.

Big ditto to that being well said.

I have always been fascinated how there is really no recorded attack by a killer whale in the wild, only by those showing their appreciation for locking them up in a big fish tank.
I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

Come on you guys! Sharks see us all as clowns and everybody knows sharks don't eat clowns!

Seems lately they've had some tastings down here to make sure though.
