As we close in on halibut season ...... ok still 2 moths away ..... it only seems appropriate to talk about what to do when you catch "the monster"
I have been playing with several different ideas and ran across a really cool tip that looks to solve one of the major problems encountered with the harpoon in the kayak.
This rigging should keep the tip in place when you point it downward to make the strike on the fish and help eliminate that gut churning feeling of watching the tip slip off the end of the harpoon.

oh come on!! Using easy solutions is no fun  ;)
The other idea is using a flying gaf head. I'll post pics soon of my first two attempts.

You just tape the cable thats attached to the harpoon head to the shaft of the harpoon with one wrap on tape.  Holds the head in place until you drive the point into the halibut then the tape pulls off.

After just about losing my hand while on a powerboat, I hold the rope as follows. I think doubly important in a kayak.  I plan on having my buoy in the water and hitting the halibut with all rope and etc in the water for anything large.  Hopefully my hook will hold and if the halibut runs up current I can reel the fish and the buoy back to me.  Tape works but it takes planning to retake after every fish. Those 'butts are some powerful fish. I haven't caught anything big enough to harpoon from my yak yet.

Same here.  Never had any problems.

One tip for anyone trying this for the first time.

Reel the butt up to about 5 inches short of the surface.  Most of the time they will hang there waiting for you to hit them with the 'poon.  Look out if any part of them breaks the surface.  They will rip off 100yrds of line in seconds.

Broccoli rubber band with the rope positioned as Rudy demonstrates in the photo. I've done it dozens of times on Halibut as large as 76lbs so far...it works. I keep half a dozen bands on the harpoon handle.

Now there's a good use for those suckers! I've always wanted to put them to good use.

They are wider than your average rubber bands.

Small zip-tie.  Also, here's a DIY Halibut Harpoon.  http://www.demonick.com/kayak/Halibut.Harpoon.DIY/Halibut.Harpoon.DIY.html

I just built a new copper point.

Question to harpooners:  where do you harpoon the fish?
