Im gonna need some new rods and reels ;) I see people are really putting a lot of thought into what they buy. Ive always just kind of shotgunned my rod and reel selections when it comes to spinning gear, cause I come from a mostly flyfishing background.

Im going to be trolling/mooching for salmon in the salt and bottom fishing/jigging in the salt.

I got the salmon rod  figured out I think. A guide buddy of mine gave it to me and said they were good. Im not sure what it is, a Lamiglass kenai special I think. My fishing shed is buried in snow so I can't check it out right now ::) Im using an Abu garcia reel on it. The ambassador I think. Im not crazy about the reel though, and I'm open to alternatives.

I do not have a dedicated Halibut rod or reel either. Or a Jigging rod. Id kind of like to combine the halibut rod with the jigging rod. I only want two poles on the yak.

Any recommendations ?

If you combine halibut and bottom fishing rods, fighting a nice 20" rockfish won't be as fun as it should be.

I think you need two separate sticks. Plus, in OR, on half the days for halibut you can't have bottomfish on board your kayak anyway.

No worries about multiple species on board up here as long as you are not violating kreel limits you're ok.

Lots of guys use Ugly Sticks (Tiger) for butts and rockfish.  If you latch on to a big one be prepared for a fight, but it's fun.  Get the best reel you can afford.  I have an Avet 2 speed reel for the butts.
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

If youre looking for a solid and versatile reel I would look at the Shimano Calcutta TE. Best reel I've ever owned. I've used it for everything from steelhead to oversize sturgeon and it performs splendidly.

Oh and +1 on the Tigers. They are super solid rods.

I've got a pole that Has Interchangable top peices for different types of fishing and can carry a few reels .But it sounds Like a New Type of Kayak Pole Design May be in order and Whats the Biggest Halibut caugth from a kayak? Ive seen big ones outta Shelter cove ,but not that big from a kayak , I do like my short 5'6" penn mariner with an old penn reel with 40lb braid line for combo bottom fishing .That been said I do have about 80+ or so poles for all types of fishing. My wife says its an illness.I tend to agree. but I can think of worse things to collect.

Biggest I've heard of was 187# butt up in AK.  Lower 48?  No idea.  Probably over 70#.  Typical?  From what it sounds like around here, nothing to under 30#.

183 in Alaska.

Lower 48.  I haven't heard of anything off a kayak above 50-ish.

A few 100's in BC.

For someone thinking  to pick up a 2-speed reel at a good price.  I recently picked up Shimano Tyrnos 8II which I found online for under $155 shipped.

http://www.greentophuntfish.com/browse.cfm/shimano-tyrnos-8-2-speed-reel-tyr8ii/4,12814.html

This is around $100 less than I found them going for from most other sources.   I have been a big fan of 2 speeds and have picked up a number over the years.  Being new to kayak fishing I fear taking one out because of the cost should I donate it by accident to the ocean floor.  At this price, I have much less concerns.
I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

Deal alert!

Although note that there is something wrong with the line capacity.  How can it hold 40/295 and 50/290?

Many to choose from. Calcutta 400's are great. So are Tekota 700-800's. These are all bigger fish reels. Cheaper but great are the Shimano Triton 200's. Got my 54"Dino with that and 50lb braid. Butts I use Penn Senator 113H but the larger Tekotas also very good. All boils down to personal preferences and budget. Same with rods. Mentioned the rod I use for Dinos and butts on the recent Halibut thread. I like Shimano. Avet makes some beauties but $$$.
Actually, everything seems spendy these days. FISHING IS $$$$$$$$! but fun.

Shakespeare Ugly Stik Tiger.  If you like 2-piece rods try the BWC 2201-2 270.  Throws, 1/2 - 6 oz, 10-50# line, 7'0", medium action.  I use mine to troll/jig/bottom fish.

I've been partial to Abu BG 7000 HS reels for these purposes (Big Game, High Speed, gear ratio 6.3/1).  I'd NOT suggest this reel for casting.  You can often find them on eBay.

If youre looking for a solid and versatile reel I would look at the Shimano Curado TE. Best reel I've ever owned. I've used it for everything from steelhead to oversize sturgeon and it performs splendidly.

Sure that's not a Calcutta TE?

+1 on the Triton (Shimano) Probably the best reel I have ever purchased.  It has now lasted me 3 seasons, with only a good cleaning and lubing it works as if it is brand new.  Takes everything salt throws at it and keeps kickin butt.  Cant beat the price either!
