Here is my completed halibut flying gaff. The goal was to be able to use an upward stroke rather than a downward stroke needed for a traditional harpoon. Also it allows me to have a flexible connection to the fish or release the ball completely.
Now I just need a halibut to test this out on.

How big are your balls?  How much flotation they have?

It looks a little bit small to me.  A big ol' girl will suck that right under and stay down on you for quite a while.

I've been thinking of something similar, just have't put it together yet. I kinda like the idea of a bang stick too. I've hit gators with'em, and it takes the fight right out instantly  >:D

It is a poly form A-1.
11.5" x 14.5" diameter x length
36.1" circumference
rated for 16kg of floatation X 2.2046 = 35 pounds
I don't see a fish holding down 35 pounds for long.

Your balls are big enough to get the job done!

Where did you get that hook, and how long is it?  I like how it simplifies the harpooning and adds a gaff in the process.  Nice design.

I think the 'big ole girl' part got you more excited than the rest of it.  Summer is coming, I hear the Hagg Lake Manatees... er um, mermaids calling you.

Your Hugeness,  rest assured that I have already taken a recon trip to sweet lady Hagg.  Judging by the sample population gathered around the nacho and hot cocoa-serving snack shack, there's going to be a healthy summer harvest for The Jade.

I bought the hook from a guy on another board. The gap length is about 4.5" and over all length is about 18". I wrapped the shaft with commercial cord for a little better wet grip. Most of the halibut I have caught come up mouth open. The idea is put the whole hook in it's mouth and pull hard. If it is a smallish ... Under 50 ... then you could probably just hold the rope and let it thrash. If it is a big'n then toss the ball and let it fight the ball.

I'm just talking about Bill's Balls.  It's a well known fact that he has HUGE balls and he puts them to work.  What's so naughty about that?   ::)

Nothing wrong, boss.  Nothing at all.  Lee's right.  Hagg on the mind, that's all.  It's just been a long winter.....

Carry on.

What did you pay for the hook?  A quick online search for flying gaff hooks shows absolutely retarded high prices.
